Boat Test: 2023 Tiara EX 60

Wanting to create a new flagship for its fleet, someone at Tiara obviously said, “Go big or go home.” And thus was born the largest and most luxurious Tiara ever built: an inboard IPS-powered yacht that, at 60 feet, 3 inches, is the queen of the fleet by a full 10 feet. Tiara also created a new EX line, which I can only assume stands for excellent or exceptional. 

The EX 60 is simply brilliant in many ways, allowing owners to tailor the layout to fit their needs. To create this newest crown jewel required combining the superb quality in construction and finish that Tiara is known for with a satisfying level of performance—in this case, 46 mph.  

I found the interior serene and surprising. It features a full-beam master amidships (you can walk around both sides of the centerline berth) and an equally spacious VIP forward, each en suite. A guest cabin with slide-together berths shares the VIP head. 

But the appeal of the EX 60 is the flow of the main deck from the windshield to the hydraulic swim platform. This is a yacht for enjoying the outdoors, with oversize folding doors in the salon and a power window to embrace the aft deck. Here, Tiara offers several seating modules to tailor the cockpit for every need. Our test boat had the aft lounge and breakfast bar, creating an alfresco dining area with a folding table, a galley with a grill, sink and fridge, and an aft-facing bar with stools. Perfect for relaxing on anchor, the cockpit also expands like an origami butterfly thanks to hinged sides that stretch the beam to more than 20 feet.  

Power for the Tiara EX 60 consists of twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 turbo diesels. These inline-six 12.8-liter engines connect by jack shafts to IPS pod drives. 

It was everything you’d expect. When hammered down, we hit 30 mph in just 17 seconds and topped out at 46 mph. At a mile-eating 29 mph, we were sipping fuel at 52 gph (besting 0.5 mpg is great economy for a boat this size), and joystick maneuvering takes the white knuckles out of tough docking situations.

High Points

• Shhh! Just 69 decibels at cruise and only 72 decibels flat-out, making conversation easy.
• Elegant decor by Mary Flores. Plus, Tiara’s design team created carved wood headboards in the staterooms and jewellike welds on rails and other metalwork throughout the boat.
• Seakeeper 9 gyro kept the EX 60 rock-solid, and Volvo Interceptor trim flaps had the boat running flat, even during hard acceleration.
• A two-burner cooktop on a 60-footer (not counting the cockpit grill) hints strongly at dining ashore.
• Deck has a lot of ups and downs: Step up to the helm level, up to the dinette, down two steps to the cockpit seating, and down two steps to the swim platform. Sure-footed guests are welcome.

Toughest Competitor

Sixty-footers without a flybridge aren’t common, but the Sunseeker Evo 60 ($2.4 million) or the Princess V60 ($2.6 million) are similar, although missing the fold-down cockpit sides and flexible cockpit layouts.

In Tiara’s 60-year history, this is its biggest, most luxurious and most expensive offering to date. The first in its new EX range, it sits above the popular C49 inboard coupe and 48LS outboard models.

Penned by Tiara’s design director Andrew Bartlett, the lines of the EX 60 closely follow those of the smaller Coupe models. That means a graceful, unbroken shearline from transom to bow, a curvy, raked-back windshield, swoopy hardtop, and lots of windows.

On first impressions of the EX, moored stern-to at the Stuart dock, it was clear the focus was on classic style and elegance, rather than breaking any design rules. Tiara leaves the bold, plumb bows and vertical windshields to the Europeans.

The real focus here, however, is on outdoor space, and here the EX 60 excels. The oversize, two-level aft cockpit features a lower section with opposite facing sofas and dining table. Power-lowering side terraces increase the beam from 16’11” to 20’6”—and make terrific dive platforms.

Step down to the hydraulic swim platform, and the entire section can lower into the water to launch a large tender—an optional 345 Williams jet RIB on our test boat—or double as a spacious beach club.

Step-up to the salon-level cockpit and the surprise-and-delight feature is the height-adjustable breakfast bar—perfect for gazing out over the stern with a coffee or sunset cocktail.

The EX features a well-equipped galley on the starboard side with a U-shaped dinette opposite. Power back the large sunroof in the hardtop, for al fresco dining.

Also impressive is the yacht’s helm station. With twin seats on either side, it’s a great place to watch the action, courtesy of terrific all-round visibility and impressively tall windows. The power-sliding pilothouse door is just a terrific feature.

Below decks are three cabins and two heads, with a spacious amidships master suite, a forward VIP and a twin-berth guest cabin. All the interior decorations are the work of Seattle-based designer Mary Flores.

Power-wise, the EX 60 is offered with 1350 Volvo Penta D13 turbo diesels with shafts driving IPS pods.

Out in the St. Lucie River it was easy to see why they chose these powerplants. Push forward on the throttles and the 55,000-pound Tiara leaps from idle to 30mph in just 17 seconds. Flat out we hit an impressive top speed of 46mph with the big Volvos spinning at just 2,454 rpm.

Throttle back to Matt’s preferred 29-mph cruise speed and the engines were burning just 52 gallons per hour, delivering a range of around 350 miles.

What impressed us the most was the hushed refinement of the EX at speed. Tiara puts a great deal of effort in keeping things quiet, and even at that 46-mph top speed, the noise level in the salon was just 72 decibels. That was just three decibels more than at 23 mph.

Despite the fact that the boat has yet to be officially unveiled, hulls 2, 3 and 4 have already been sold. After the Ex 60’s long-distance delivery, they can be sure the boat can go the extra mile.

Out on the foredeck there is an integrated daybed with backrests offering marina-facing views, as well as a pair of curving side chaise-longues and a chilled drinks cabinet nestled up against the bow. Wide side decks lined in teak lead back to a sprawling aft-cockpit that must be one of the most sociable outdoor living spaces seen on a yacht of this class, featuring three separate zones for chilling out. At the very rear of the boat there is a full-beam hydraulic bathing platform that lowers into the water and used to store a modern jet tender, with a hidden storage locker to stern offering enough space for kayaks and Seabobs.

A couple of steps up takes you to a contemporary-styled aft-cockpit with a leatherette transom sofa that faces another stern-facing sofa with an extending drinks or dining table placed in-between. Should you wish then one of the sofas can be exchanged for an outdoor wet-bar station with an icemaker, chilled storage, a sink and an electric barbecue grill. Fancy a bit more space while sipping cocktails back here? Then simply fold down the bulwarks to open up more room in the form of two cocktail balconies that defy gravity to hover over the water. Further forward and partially sheltered by an overhang there are a pair of L-shaped loveseats, a trio of outdoor Ottomans and an adjustable steel and teak serving bar. This entire cockpit area can also be configured as an Adventure module complete with fishing equipment such as livewells, rod holders, fighting chairs, plumbed fish boxes and tackle centers.

Teak and wenge-lined interiors on the Tiara EX60 are no less impressive, and thanks to sliding glass doors, panoramic side glazing and an above-helm sunroof they will always seem light and breezy even on overcast days. There is a curving C-shaped sofa in leather and a trapezoidal timber dining table to port while to starboard there is an open galley with Corian work surfaces, a two-zone cooktop, under-counter fridge-freezer units, a microwave oven and a stainless-steel sink that can be covered when not in use. A pair of forward-facing helm chairs face not one but two modern dashboards, one with the main controls and another with back-up display screens. The helm features Penta joystick handling, Garmin multi-function touchscreens, Volvo Interceptor trim tabs, throttle controls, VHF radio, a Ritchie compass and power-assisted steering.

Generous lower-deck sleeping quarters for up to six overnight guests benefit from plenty of head clearance, knife-insert windows with opening porthole inserts, glossy timber surrounds and plush carpeting underfoot. There is a starboard twin cabin with a full-height closet and a bedside table, while a VIP double to the bow features an island bed, a cedar-lined locker, hidden storage and a lavish en-suite with an enclosed shower. A full-beam owner’s stateroom sits amidship, and features a side sofa, a queen-sized bed, bedside cabinets, a full-height closet, reading lamps, strip lighting and a swish bathroom with a walk-in waterfall shower cubicle.

A pair of 1350mhp Volvo Penta IPS30 diesel pod-drive engines prompt top speeds of around 38 knots with cruising speeds not far behind. A fuel tank holding up to 700 US Gallons of diesel, meanwhile, should keep you out on both inland and coastal waters for days on end without needing to refuel.

Unveiling the Tiara Yachts EX 54: A Comprehensive Review

Tiara Yachts entered new territory with its EX 60 last year , and its EX 54 follows that same magic in a smaller package. Like the EX 60, the EX 54 has modular seating in the cockpit, allowing each owner to tailor the yacht to a specific mission.

My educated guess says that the Lounge module will be the most popular, with a pair of settees facing across a folding teak table. Not only does this setup make for great alfresco entertaining, but the aft settee also incorporates a sink, grill, fridge and optional ice maker across the transom.

The Adventure module has fishing written all over it, replacing the aft settee with more foot space and a console with five rod holders, tackle lockers, a cutting board and a sink.

The last module is the Glass Patio, which replaces the backrest of the aft settee with a laminated glass bulkhead so guests (and parents) can keep an eye on the watery action off the stern. I’d recommend the optional hydraulic platform (a 5-foot platform is standard) with steps descending into the water and built-in chocks to stow a tender. All the cockpit modules raise electrically to reveal a garage for water toys and gear.

Like many powerboats these days, the Tiara EX 54 has foldout hullsides to create extended cockpit space, but Tiara goes further with flush-mounted boarding doors on each side. This design makes for easy step-aboard access while leaving nothing to stub toes with the sides folded down.

Forward of the seating modules and up two steps on the mezzanine level is an aft-facing table with twin hassocks (with stowage). Forward of that and to port, with an electrically disappearing window, a pair of stools create a salon-facing bar. The adjacent two-panel sliding doors can open the salon entirely to the cockpit.

In the salon, which has a Herculan teak sole, a convertible dinette to port forms a berth by lowering the high-gloss teak table. (It’s the same size as the one on the EX 60.) The galley is fitted out for cruising, with a two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, cookware, a microwave/convection oven, a two-drawer fridge and a stainless-steel sink. Behind the galley countertop is a pop-up 43-inch TV that faces the lounge. The absence of overhead cabinets makes for a panoramic view, with stowage in drawers and lockers.

Just forward, the skipper can use the sliding pilothouse door for easy side-deck access. This, along with a clever outboard sliding armrest on the Stidd double-wide helm seat, lets the skipper stand on the side deck and use the Volvo Penta joystick for docking. Overhead is a Webasto electric sunroof.

The dash is fitted with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit, including two 22-inch Garmin GPSMap 8622 displays and a row of backlit buttons for systems. The equipment includes a Garmin autopilot, Fantom 54 radar, VHF radio and aft-facing cockpit camera.

Opposite the helm is a double-wide companion seat that, at the push of a button, slides aft so everyone can join in the action while running to the next waypoint. The seat also slides forward to create a U-shaped dinette. That companion seat has a console with an optional Garmin GPSMap 8622.

Step down into the airy, bright atrium from salon level, and a door leads forward from the foyer to the VIP stateroom with a walk-around island queen berth. It lifts to reveal lighted stowage for suitcases. A door allows private access to the guest head—also off the foyer—with a VacuFlush head and stall shower. Across the foyer is a second stateroom, ideally for kids, with bunk berths.

The full-beam owner’s stateroom is aft with 6-foot-​5-inch headroom and a queen-size pedestal berth. The EX 54 that I got aboard had the full bureau to starboard. (A settee is optional.) The space had 23 drawers for extended cruising, plus a cedar-lined hanging locker like the ones in the other staterooms. A GE washer-dryer was tucked away in the passageway to this stateroom, and the private head included a Lacava vessel sink, stowage and a stall shower.

Going forward on deck is made secure by solid coamings capped by stainless-steel rails. The bow area has a multiuse lounge with sun pads and a removable table. The all-chain windlass is tucked under a hatch, with a wired remote as well as helm controls. I liked the two walkways on each side of the windlass locker, allowing deck crew to look down securely on the anchor.

Power for the EX 54 is twin Volvo Penta IPS2 950 diesels paired to pod drives, and the engine room is clearly arranged for service techs or hands-on owners. A five-step ladder leads down from the cockpit, and everything from the oil changers and seacocks to the 13.5 kW Onan genset is readily accessible.

Underway, the EX 54 is pure fun. We started our runs in smooth water on the Intracoastal Waterway, where I checked a 33.7-knot top speed and indulged in some doughnuts and swoops. I recorded just 70 decibels at full throttle with the sunroof open, making conversation easy. Once offshore, the yacht’s fine entry and 14-degree transom deadrise handled the lumpy Gulf Stream, throwing spray far to the side and providing a smooth, predictable, stable ride. I didn’t need handrails, but I did take note that Tiara has provided a plethora of them, often neatly concealed (next to the forward sun pad, for example).

Whether for entertaining, cruising with friends, fishing or simply enjoying the water, the Tiara Yachts EX 54 can be tailored to fit many owners’ ideas of fun.  

This second-generation Volvo Penta diesel IPS2 950 pod-drive system punches out 750 hp, driving through a 1.7:1 gearbox with a jack shaft that allows the engines to sit closer to the center of the yacht. With Volvo’s P4 props, cruise speed was 26 knots for a range of about 300 nautical miles.  

Built To Take It

The EX 54 has a no-wood hull. The yacht’s hull, deck and topsides are backed by closed-cell foam coring that provides strength as well as soundproofing. A fiberglass grid supports the engines and interior, adding strength and rigidity. 

Garmin Glass Cockpit

Optimized for use with Volvo Penta power, this user-friendly interface combines navigation (a chart plotter, GPS, sonar and radar) with operations (engine data and multitouch systems screens). Preloaded with BlueChart G3 coastal charts, it provides detail to 1 foot with contours for fishing, as well as depth shading and shallow-water warnings.

Tiara’s Newest 56-Foot, 600 HP Boat Is a Speed Demon in a Full-Feature Package

Tiara Yachts just joined a small, elite group of builders specializing in large center consoles— very large center consoles above 54 feet. When HCB launched its monster 65-foot in 2018, with five 627hp custom outboards, it started a new trend. Others soon followed: Midnight Express followed with its 60 Pied-A-Mer, the Cigarette Tirranna 59, Nor-Tech 560 Sport, Scout 539 LXF, and Valhalla V-55.

These boats turned out to be a revolution, rather than an evolution, for the center-console segment, which just a decade ago leaned towards humble, utilitarian designs in the 20- to 30-foot range, almost exclusively used by offshore fisherman. The explosion of outboard-power, in ever-larger horsepower sizes, gave designers, and a new segment of non-fishing boaters, the realization that center consoles make excellent dayboats. And that’s exactly where the sub-50-foot market has headed in the last decade.

These larger models have become status symbols, partly for their impressive speeds, but also for the luxurious details—at least insofar as sportfish boat makers view luxury—across the boats. But many don’t quite understand the definition of luxury on a boat, at least not the same level that brands from Italy understand and implement it, which explains the significant increase in imports over the last ten years.

Tiara is one of the few US boat brands that gets luxury is more than expensive looking gadgets, but about the whole package.

Its new 56 LS, standing for luxury sport, strikes a nice balance between the two words in its name, without going to extremes on either end. “We want to have the performance, but offer a true luxury experience,” Tom Slikkers, Tiara CEO told Robb Report , bristling a bit when his new boat is compared to competitors.  “We see luxury as not just being able to get from point a to point b in record time, but enjoying the whole day aboard. Our competitors aren’t necessarily thinking that way.”

The LS flagship is the fastest boat Tiara has ever designed, with four 600hp Mercury Verado outboards hanging off the transom. It can reach a top end of 57mph. That’s slower than most of its competitors, but is fine with Tiara owners. “We did voice of the customer surveys with clients, specifically the ones pushing for this, and they’re happy with that speed,” says Slikkers. “They’re even more happy with a day yacht that offers a free flow of space, so you can move around quite easily.”

The 56 LS also has some distinctive features from its smaller 48LS and 43LS siblings. “We realized it was time for the next generation,” says Andrew Bartlett, Tiara’s director of design. “We wanted to keep the DNA of our center console design, but provide more enclosure behind the helm station, so owners can seal it during bad weather.”

A disappearing bulkhead, a feature taken from its EX60 inboard model, proved a viable solution. “That let us keep the boat’s main characteristic of openness in good weather, but provides protection so owners don’t have to go below-decks in bad,” adds Bartlett.

The aft cockpit has a modular design that allows movement of the seating, inclusion of the dining table and connection to the outdoor galley for different social occasions. Both rear sides fold down to expand the cockpit size by about a third.

The cabin is a two-stateroom design, with two heads and a shower. The foredeck also has a settee and table, more in line with a cruiser than a center console. Fit and finish throughout promises to be as luxurious as Tiara’s other models.

The new 56 LS may not be able to claim the title for speed or size—Scout is building a new 67-foot center console for release later this year—but it could well be the most luxurious center console on the water when it debuts at the Miami International Boat Show next February.

Tiara Yachts Expands LS Line with Largest Outboard Model to Date, the 56 LS

Holland, Mich., (August 27, 2024)  -  Tiara Yachts , the family-owned manufacturer of American-made luxury watercrafts, announced today the addition of the 56 LS to its portfolio of Luxury Sport vessels. The largest and most ambitious of Tiara’s outboard models to date, the 56 LS will feature the sophisticated exterior and interior amenities the LS lineup is known for, while also offering the power of four Mercury Verado 600 V12 outboard engines.

“The Luxury Sport formula has been a successful one for Tiara, elevating the day yachting experience with versatile social zones and luxurious amenities. The 56 LS builds upon that foundation. Everything is amplified on this boat,” Tiara Yachts CEO, Tom Slikkers, said. “I’m confident our customers are going to be just as excited as we are about this addition to our portfolio.”

Tiara’s first quad engine outboard model, the 56 LS will have a top speed of 57 MPH, making it one of the fastest Tiara ever built. The integrated electronics package includes Garmin ®  Marine Navigation Systems.

The exterior of the 56 LS offers boaters several social spaces including a fully equipped galley that overlooks the aft cockpit. Two unique aft cockpit module options focused on entertaining or fishing allow each vessel to be customized. Port and starboard Hullside terraces expand the beam by more than six feet.

Below deck, two staterooms and two private heads can comfortably welcome five guests for overnight or extended stays.

“Our LS line has been a favorite of our customers and we're eager to showcase this new addition to our portfolio,” said Andrew Bartlett, Director of Design at Tiara.  “Our customers will find multiple features onboard that allow them to enjoy the water, entertain family and friends and comfortably stay overnight. As outboard models continue to have a resurgence in the boating industry, we’re excited to introduce another Tiara to the market.”

The launch of the 56 LS comes amidst several milestones for Tiara Yachts including:

The 56 LS will be debuting at the 2025 Miami International Boating Show.
