10 best center cockpit two stateroom sailboats for under $200,000.

Originally published on July 20, 2010, this list of best sailboats has been my most popular post. I think that is because it confirms what the majority of cruisers are looking for. I am republishing it with minor updates. Thanks for all the great feedback I have received, and please continue to check into my far flung yachting world for a new post every Wednesday.

center cockpit sailing yacht

I always thought a SailNet article about the most common cruising sailboat was dead-on. I especially liked how the article mentioned Rob Jordan, my father, and maybe that is why it rings so true. The article argues that the most popular sailboat is 45-feet in length, a center cockpit, and cutter rigged. That makes me wonder: what are the choices in this range? The below list consists ten of the best center cockpit, around 45-foot sailboats for the average cruising couple. I did not limit the list to only cutters. Such a couple usually has a budget of between $100,000 to $200,000 and can comfortably handle a boat in the 40 to 50 foot range. They have some sailing experience including chartering, lake racing, and maybe owning a smaller sailboat in the 30 to 40 foot range. The couple is retiring and moving on to experience the cruising lifestyle full-time.

This center cockpit about 45-foot length combination provides the optimal size and accommodations for a couple cruising. This combination is usually paired with a cutter rig, fin keel, and skeg hung rudder. I have purposely not included designs which have old fashioned, full keel underbodies like a Westsail 42 because of the performance trade-offs. I have avoided sailboats that I consider aesthetically unappealing. Please comment below with any suggested additions or retractions. I have listed the sailboats in alphabetical order of brand name.

  • Brewer 44 : Extended version of the Ted Brewer Whitby 42. A much better design and build.
  • Gulfstar 44 : Dick Lazzara design. Mark I versions with an athwartship king aft or Mark II versions with a centerline queen. Nice performance.
  • Hylas 44 : German Frers beauty and Queen Long quality. Early ones had a smaller cockpit and offset berth aft. Look for shoal draft versions of 5′ 5″ and swim platform extended 45.5’s.
  • Kelly Peterson 46 : Extended version of the Doug Peterson designed, Jack Kelly built 44-footer. Avoid the Formosa ones. Draft is a bit deep at 6′ 6″.
  • Mason 44 : Sweet lines on this classic looking PAE Mason designed, Ta Shing built cruiser. Bigger sister of Mason 43.
  • Norseman 447 : Another quality built Ta Shing cruiser with excellent performance and low maintenance exterior. Designed by Robert Perry.
  • Pearson 422 : Rare sistership to the 424. Perfect liveaboard interior on Bill Shaw design and above average performance.
  • Tayana 42 CC : Comes in less popular aft cockpit versions. The interiors are custom and really vary in layout. While I admire the design, aesthetically I think her stern is a bit too beamy.

This list is of course in no way all encompassing. If you sail a yacht or admire one that would fit in this list please feel free to offer it for consideration below.

You are the first person I have ever heard say the Irwin 43 is a bluewater sailboat. Do you think it is built tough enough to go off shore?

Thanks for the note and good point about the suspect build quality of Irwins. My experience is via survey/seatrials. On the last Irwin we sold, the surveyor advised for the prospect to reject the boat based on a cursory inspection. The main issue was the chainplates which was not necessarily a build related problem. The problem with Irwin Yachts is that their quality was inconsistent. They could build two sailboats side by side in their Tampa Bay yard. One would come out terrible and the other perfect. They were just so sloppy with the details like backing plates, cleat sizes. Most manufacturers have eras of good construction and bad, but Irwin was haphazard. Now 20 years later, all the little build issues should be worked out. I think bluewater is too strong a word, but Irwins deserve more respect.

Where are you planning on going?

your website and information is fantastic. is the mason 44 a center cockpit? what about the steven/hylas 47 in the top 10. am looking for a nordic 44, but alas, you have not done a review on her or cant find that review. thank you for all your great information as it is very helpful. wish you were my broker. david

Yes, the Mason 43/44 has the aft cockpit/aft stateroom arrangement with nice, traditional lines. I put the 47 on the three stateroom list. Thanks for your kind comments.

RE: Irwin 43 After much research we purchased an 85 Irwin 43 for an extended cruise. The layout of the boat was very appealing because of the large deck, cockpit and light interior. When purchased, our surveyor warned us of the build quality issues but found no problems with the hull, chain plates or deck. After a year of ownership we just had our Irwin hauled and inspected, everything is in great shape.

We find the Irwin 43 to be a pleasure to sail. As expected we can’t sail into the wind so well, but all other points of sail are good. In 25 knots with 7-10 ft trailing seas we were very comfortable. We were surprised to win in our class in the 125 mile Newport to Ensenada race.

We’ve had to re-caulk the ports on the deck as well as replace some of the port lights at the bow. Additionally, we had to caulk under the cap rail because of some seepage at the deck to hull seal. My understanding is that this is pretty standard for boats of this age.

Is it completely obvious or can anybody name the yacht featured in the image above?

Richard, first of all thanks for posting this information, it is extremely helpful to find actual reviews for cruising sailboats that are semi-affordable. My husband and I are looking to purchase a boat for cruising. We found an Amel Maramu but it needs some work and as we are financing the boat the bank rejected the survey (we are very sad). We looked at an Iriwn 43 from 1988 recently; however, there isn’t much information available on the web reviewing these boats. Given the inconsistency in build, is there a way to tell that the build is suspect prior to getting a survey? Also, are they suitable for passage making? We are hesitant to shell out funds for haul outs, surveys, etc as these fees add up fast and we’ve already lost this investment on the Amel.

Thanks. I tell myself that at least I am trying even if my prose is not always that great.

In regards to the specific Irwin you mention, I have no way to assess her condition or vouch for her seaworthyness. The only way to determine her quality is to get a survey. Based simply on build and design, the Amel is a superior passagemaker while the Irwin is superior dockside. But an adequately equipped Irwin 43 can certainly do excellent bluewater work. Simply read Paul West’s comment on this same article.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the Amel. We are representing a Maramu here in Fort Lauderdale. If you still have interest in an Amel, I can attest to her condition. I have not seen any local Irwins. I am happy to give my honest appraisal of any local boat.

All my best.

It looks like a Hylas 44 though the red colour of the canvas above deck is confusing me.

yes the irwin a very nice offshore sailor i shoot from the carolina’s to the bahamas no questions asked enjoy the season and return comfortable  and dry.

Please create a similar list for same customer who may have up to $400,000 to pay!

Hi mgshorn: Try ( http://www.jordanyachts.com/archives/3445 ) RJ

Sent from my iPad

Some years ago, a big Irwin sank  while on passage from North Carolina to the Abacos after a large wave pushed in her fixed ports and flooded the boat. For this reason I would avoid the boat for serious bluewater work.

I have a 1989 49′ Taswell You can get them for under 400,000. They are awesome boats and I highly recommend it.

We looked at most of the boats on your list before we found our cruising boat.  We purchased a 1995 Morgan 45 by Catalina (not the 44.4 Nelson Marek) and there are things about this boat that many on your list do not have.  We found little information out there on the CM45 and area still scouring the internet to find info good or bad.  We love our boat more every day and she is everything we want in a cruising home.  I would love to hear your thoughts on the CM45.

This is a fabulous post! Thank you! And do keep updating – it’s such a generous gift to the rest of us. 🙂 Thank you so much.

Great article….. Thanks

and Amel 53 Super Marimu would be the way to go.

Fairly certain it’s a Hylas 44. Did that really take 5 years 🙂

New Yachts on the Market: Latest Racing & Cruising Designs

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 - yacht

In the market for a racing or cruising yacht? It’s been another bumper year for the boatbuilding industry… Sam Jefferson casts his eye over the latest launches.

New yachts: cruising, wauquiez 55.

Wauquiez is a marque that has been much revered in cruising circles since they first started building elegant cruisers back in the 1960s. Their new 55 boat is definitely intriguing and one of the striking features is the centre cockpit with the helm offset to port under a well protected solid plexiglass sprayhood.  Another interesting feature is the option of a swing keel which gives you an almighty 4.2m of draft when lowered and 1.6m when raised. Aside from that, the boat dares to be different by supplying two Volvo D2 engines as standard.  The interior looks extremely spacious and Lombard has capitalised on full forward sections and plenty of beam to ensure that there is a huge interior space. In addition, the centre cockpit allows for a huge aft owner’s cabin.

Moody 48 DS

Moody has been under German ownership as part of the Hanse group for many years now and offers a different sort of cruiser in quality deck saloon cruisers which are designed by Judel/Vrolijk. The new 48 is the first new launch they have made since their 41 2017 and fits between the Moody 45 and 54 in their range. As you’d expect, this is a boat that is big on space and comfort, featuring a big, beamy hull with twin rudders. Performance has not been neglected, however, because she sports a generous rig to push her 21,000kg displacement through the water.

Inspirationmarine.co.uk

Moody - cruising yacht

Hanse Yachts broke with go to designer of many years Judel/Vrolijk a couple of years back and this was the catalyst behind the launch of a new generation of Hanses designed by the French team of Berret/Racoupeau. In addition to a marked change in styling, with inverted ‘dreadnought bow and hard chines aft giving the boats a more angular look, the main drive seemed to be to up the quality of the boats down below – which was certainly achieved. The new 590 is their biggest boat yet of this new generation and offers easy sailing on a big scale. The new boat features an optional hard top bimini, a tender garage and acres of space down below. The boat will be officially unveiled at Cannes Boat show and promises to be a head turner.

New Cruising Yacht: Maxus 35

Maxus Yachts is a Polish company that made its name. building small trailerable yachts to sail on the Masurian lakes not far from the Russian border. Now the company has moved up a size bracket and their new 35 is bigger and aimed more at offshore sailing than previous designs. The result is a spacious yacht with striking styling and a semi deck saloon arrangement that bathes the saloon with natural light. It all points to promises decent performance and accommodation at a highly competitive price.

northman.pl

French manufacturer Dufour has really pumped up the volume with its latest generation of yachts. The new Umberto Felci designed 44 follows on from the 37 and 41 which have already drawn plaudits thanks to their remarkable ability to create internal volume without looking overly dumpy. The 44 continues in this vein boasting plentiful beam aft and full sections at the bow above the waterline. The interior is positively palatial and there is a choice of three or four cabin layouts.

dufour-yachts.com

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 is the successor to the 349 which was actually launched way back in 2013. At 34’1” excluding the bowsprit she is the starter boat in the range and viewed by the French manufacturer as offering a gateway into sailing for young families.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 - cruising yacht

The boat is designed by Marc Lombard and Piaton Yacht design and, as you’d expect the lines are bang up to date, offering plenty of internal volume via fuller forward sections. Like its predecessor the 349, the new boat is available with a swing keel – a real boon in UK waters. The interior is really quite large and there is the option of twin doubles aft plus a double forward.

Elan GT6 Explorer

The Elan GT6 was a very stylish fast cruiser from drawing board of rob Humphreys that has been very well received since its launch. The GT6 Explorer is, as you can imagine a variation on this theme but the manufacturers have identified rthe potential of the boat as a fast blue water cruiser and built on that. As such, the boat fuel and water tankage has been boosted as has battery power. There is also the option of an all electric version utilising Oceanvolt’s pioneering technology.

elan-yachts.com

Elan GT6 Explorer

It has been some years since Danish manufacturers X Yachts realised that if they offered a de tuned Xc cruising range alongside its out and out performance yachts, it would massively enlarge its customer base. The project was a huge success and the Xc range is now into its second generation with the launch of the Xc47. The new launch is one of the first since X Yachts divorce from founder and chief designer Niels Jeppesen and the result is a yacht that leans heavily towards the cruising market, featuring something not far from a deck saloon. The hull lines feature plenty of beam aft and there has obviously been a very conscious effort to up the cruising ante. That said, the boat retains a powerful rig and weight has been kept reasonably modest.

New Yachts: Racing

Cf 580 ran 8.

Ran 8 is one of the latest launches from the drawing board of Shaun Carkeek and is a boat that has already cut a dash by taking overall and line honours in the RORC Channel Race. This is a boat that comes from the same mould as Oystercatcher XXXV, launched to much fanfare in 2021. The new boat boasts an uprated water ballast system which is designed to reduce the number of crew required from eight to seven. In addition to this, electric propulsion has been introduced.

Ran, SWE 520 - needles racing

The boat is not designed to one particular set of rules and the main aim is simply to design a boat that will go as fast as possible in a range of conditions. The result is a boat optimised for offshore conditions, in which she will be somewhat quicker than a TP52.

carkeekdesignpartners.com

Jeanneau Sun Fast 30

The Sun Fast 30 is a VPLP project who have teamed up with Multiplast to produce a strict one design yacht at what Jeanneau feels is a competitive price. The new boat features full forward sections married to light (2,700kg) displacement, twin rudders and flat aft sections to provide a boat that planes easily and early. The boat is available in two versions: One Design and Club. The one design version features a carbon mast mainsheet track and uprated electronics pack. The Club version has an aluminium mast and a bridle for the mainsheet. The aim is to make it more affordable to club racers.

Clubswan 28: Racing

The Clubswan 28 is a something of a break from tradition for Nautor Swan who have never produced a yacht this small. She rounds off their ClubSwan range and is a pure one design racer set up for four crew. At 1000kg, this Juan Kouyoumdijan design is going to be fast but she appears to be much less technical than boats higher up the range, eschewing foils and keeping things as simple as possible. There is no accommodation.

nautorswan.com

Clubswan 28

Reichel/Pugh 56 Vasara

The design house of Reichel/Pugh has produced some memorable yachts over the years and  the design brief here was for a fast, competitive yacht that was also comfortable and luxuriously appointed down below. There are a number of interesting touches. Most notably, a split backstay and square topped mainsail can be switched out for a single backstay and standard main when cruising. The keel has a substantial 4.1m depth but this can be raised to 2.4m for entering port. The interior is constructed almost exclusively out of carbon but a thin veneer of wood is placed over this to soften things up. The result is a sleek and versatile racer/cruiser.

New Yachts: Bluewater Cruisers

Bestavaer 36.

Bestavaer Yachts is a Dutch boatbuilder specialising in steel construction. They are reputed for building handsome steel ‘go anywhere’ yachts, generally in the 50-70’ bracket. The announcement of an all new 36 footer is therefore something of a surprise and not an unwelcome one. The new boat marries a big rig with a decent displacement ot provide a boat that is both seaworthy but none too slow. As with her bigger sisters, the 36 is designed to be a very practical ctuiser and is therefore equipped with a swing keel which will allow her to take the ground when required and the draft is a mere 0.7m with the board up and a substantial 2.4m with the board down.

bestavaer.com

Boreal Yachts sit in that very French cadre of utilitarian aluminium ‘go anywhere’ yachts much loved by soul sailors who idolise Moitessier and dream of communing with the albatross. Yet these soul sailors seem to have developed a taste for a spot of luxury too and the Boreal 70 is typical of the latest iteration of these hardy swing keel boats in that she is huge and surprisingly well appointed, boating such luxuries as a dishwasher should you so wish to choose that option. Sacre bleu! Nevertheless, this is a tough go anywhere cruiser which is at home in the tropics or the high latitudes.

boreal-yachts.com

Hallberg Rassy 69

Swedish manufacturer Hallberg Rassy is an institution in the world of blue water cruising. Yet it’s an institution that isn’t afraid to evolve and many were shocked when the boatbuilder started to introduce twin rudders and broader aft sections to its designs. The 69 is another step forward, being the largest boat ever built by the Swedes and nudging towards the cadre of pocket superyacht. The boat is designed by German Frers and features a big rig and contemporary lines familiar to those who are familiar with the most recent launches from the yard. The difference with the 69 is she is just a lot bigger and more luxurious. Far not though, the trademark Hallberg Rassy armchairs are still an option.

Contest 63CS

Dutch boatbuilder Contest is famed for building high quality blue water cruisers and their all new 63CS looks straight out of that playbook. Designed by their go to nabal architects Judel/Vrolijk, this is a big, luxurious cruising yacht that will boat good performance particularly for those who love a spot of tradewind sailing. This is a centre cockpit yacht with a relatively modest 31,900kg displacement and a decent sail area pointing to a very versatile long distance cruiser.

New Yachts: Performance Cruisers

Grand soleil blue.

Italian manufacturer Grand Soleil seems to have been producing ever larger cruiser/racers so news of the launch of the Grand soleil Blue, a 30’ weekender is welcome. The boat is very interesting as it is the first fully recyclable production yacht built in Italy and features biodegradable resins in construction meaning that the boat ban be separated out and re used at the end of the boats life. The boat also features and electric motor and sails made of recycled materiels. The design is clearly performance oriented but there is pleasant and stylish weekend accommodation.

Grand Soleil Blue - bluewater cruiser

Saffier SL 46

Dutch manufacturer Saffier Yachts has specialised in turning out fast, stylish weekend sailers with an emphasis on performance and ease of use. That is, until now. By launching the new SL 46 the boatbuilders has moved into an altogether new realm as this boat is unquestionably a cruiser/racer capable of offshore passages. This is an intriguing move, as it pitches Saffier against a plethora of established operators such as Grand Soleil, Italia Yachts, even Beneteau and Jeanneau. Anyway, the SL 46 looks the part, featuring modern aggressive styling couple to a big rig, light displacement and a deep, T-shaped keel. The interior looks stylish and luxurious and the boat is available with the option of a tender garage – something of an oddity in a 46 footer.

saffieryachts.com

Saffier SL 46

Tofinou 7.9

The new Tofinou 7.9 follows in the vein of other yachts in their range in that she is a performance oriented modern classic day sailer. As the name suggests, the boat is 7.9m making her the smallest boat in the range and she is available with a swing keel or fixed T shaped keel. The boat is available with an electric outboard or a diesel inboard and offers a blend of lustrous woods and light carbon laminates which gives the boat a classy air while also promising exhilarating sailing. There is also a small double berth forward if you do want to spend a night afloat.

tofinou.com

La Rochelle based RM Yachts has made a name for itself by being the last company standing when it comes to the mass production of epoxy/ply yachts. This is partly because it’s hideously complicated to put together an epoxy/ply yacht. The result, however, is a lightweight yacht that is stiff and strong. RM has made a name for building sporty cruiser/racers with the option of lift, fixed or bilge keels. The 1080 is a welcome mid sized addition to their range. Designed by Marc Lombard, the 1080 features plenty of beam aft, fullish forward sections and generous sail area. The looks are distinctive and the cockpit layout is innovative plus interior space is impressive.

When you take to the skies one of the most important things when it comes to preparing for your flight is knowing where you'll be seated on the airplane. Like most other airlines, United gives its guests assigned seating on its flights. The majority of customers can select from a variety of seats for free, but there are also options for preferred seating and even upgrades for those who are willing to pay. Here's a look at United Airlines seat selection and United Airlines seat assignment policies.

Most United Airlines flights will have at least two cabin classes: economy and first class. Depending on where you’re going, you may also find business class and premium economy seating.

No matter your fare class, you will be able to choose a seat from the available selection, though how much you’ll pay and the associated fees will differ according to your ticket and various other factors.

How much is seat selection on United Airlines? Charges vary, but generally speaking, the longer and more in-demand your flight, the more expensive it will be for your seat selection.

Basic economy tickets don't provide complimentary seat selection in any cabin. In exchange for cheaper tickets, you can either opt to pay for a seat assignment or wait until check-in and be randomly assigned a seat.

Families and groups who book basic economy tickets won't be seated together; though again, they can pay to ensure that they’re near each other.

Standard economy

You may be wondering: “How do I choose my seat on United Airlines?” Happily, those booking a regular economy class ticket will have the ability to book a seat for free, although the available options may not be desirable. In this case, customers can also choose to pay for better seats while maintaining their economy class ticket.

If you’re traveling with young children you may want to know: “Does United seat families together?” Yes, it does. If you’re booking an economy ticket or above, United’s system will automatically attempt to seat children under 15 on the same reservation together with their parents.

Preferred seating

Preferred seating features seats with better locations than standard United economy flights. The seats are the same, but they tend to be closer to the front of the cabin. Costs for preferred seating vary depending on the flight, but these are the cheapest paid seat upgrades you can find on United flights.

Economy Plus

Economy Plus seats are within the standard economy cabin, though they’re located just behind first class seating. They provide more legroom than regular economy seats and also offer free alcoholic beverages on premium transcontinental routes. These seats are more expensive than preferred seats.

Premium Plus

Premium Plus is United’s premium economy offering and is available on select flights. This is better than economy class but not as good as United’s international business class, Premium Plus seats are all free for those who book this cabin.

United first and business class

Like Premium Plus, those who book either first or business class can choose any seat within the cabin for free.

United Airlines’ seating policies can be confusing, especially when you’re booking an economy class ticket. The short of it is this: If you book at least a standard economy ticket, you’ll be able to choose a seat for free during the booking process as long as you're traveling on a United-operated flight (versus a flight operated by a partner). You can also pay to have better seats, though some United elite members will receive access to these better seats for free. Basic economy customers, meanwhile, will always need to pay to select a seat.

United Basic Economy Passengers Can Now Pay To Assign Seats In Advance

United Basic Economy Passengers Can Now Pay To Assign Seats In Advance

  • Ben Schlappig

It’s quite interesting to see how United has modified their basic economy concept since introducing it early last year. United first introduced basic economy on select flights last February, and then extended it to almost all domestic flights last May.

United (in particular president Scott Kirby) was quite smug about the introduction of basic economy. Kirby thought for sure it would be successful if implemented across their network, and expected that better segmenting the marketing would generate a billion dollars in incremental revenue annually. When they presented the numbers, they did so based on the percentage of passengers they thought would opt for basic economy, and didn’t account for the customers they’d lose because of the introduction of basic economy.

The fact that an airline thinks they can introduce this without losing a significant percentage of their passengers shows how the US airline industry is desperately in need of more competition, because they basically feel like they have captive customers. The good news is that basic economy hasn’t worked out the way United had hoped, and they’ve backtracked on it quite a bit. Originally almost all domestic fares (even expensive last minute tickets) had basic economy, while now they’ve eliminated basic economy from many of their more expensive domestic fares.

Well, United has now decided that they want to segment their passenger base even further. One of the main restrictions on basic economy tickets has been that you can’t select a seat assignment in advance. As of February 1, 2018, United is letting basic economy passengers pay to assign their seats up until 24 hours before departure (at that point seat assignments become free).

As you’ll see during the booking process, the page asking you to choose whether you want a basic economy fare or not now says “choose a complimentary seat, or change or upgrade seats,” rather than “choose, change or upgrade seats.”

united purchase seat assignment

The next page shows “advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and up until check-in opens.”

united purchase seat assignment

So, how much is United charging for seat assignments on basic economy fares? It will vary by flight, but for a Tampa to Chicago flight for later in the year, they’re charging $5 to assign a middle seat, $10 to assign a window seat, and $15 to assign an aisle seat.

united purchase seat assignment

For what it’s worth, the fare difference between economy and basic economy is only about $20 one-way

united purchase seat assignment

I guess there are two ways to view this change on United’s part:

  • Basic economy isn’t panning out as United had hoped, and they’re acting desperately to try and generate more revenue, by now letting you buy one of the main perks that that’s excluded on these fares
  • United is being smart in their effort to infinitely segment the market; after all, there are some people who may not value a carry-on, but who may still be willing to pay more to assign a seat; however, at some point this all seems a bit silly

What do you make of United now selling seat assignments on basic economy fares?

It's terrible. Have to pay extra for seats just to sit next to my family. I have flying anxiety and they choose to seperate people. Smh! Paying for a checked bag, no carry-on, it's sad.

Some people pay for more leg room because they are tall.

We found ourselves on UNITED last week only because our usual JETBLUE non-stop was sold out and UNITED offered a convenient travel time. We booked our BOS-IAD-AUS round trip through EXPEDIA which immediately books you into UNITED's "basic economy" fare. I later received a tersely worded email from UNITED explaining what "basic economy" means and what NOT to expect at this fare. I later received a tersely worded email from UNITED explaining what "basic economy" means and what NOT to expect at this fare. I upgraded to "preferred seating" and for an additional $243.00 later, my wife and myself were allowed to sit together. In ALL FOUR flight segments the gate agents felt the need to continually remind all "basic economy" passengers in a condescending tone that you board LAST, sit where you are assigned, have NO ACCESS to the overhead storage bins and you will need to stuff any personal belongings under the seat ahead. The tone in ALL FOUR flight segments was basically you are steerage and clearly not as welcome as boarding groups one through four. If UNITED is going to offer a "basic economy" product and try to compete with the LCC's , they really need to reconsider their marketing and correspondence and scripting at the gate agent level. If I want to fly a LCC, I can fly SOUTHWEST for less, have service with a smile and no $30.00 checked bag fee. I can fly SPIRIT for MUCH LESS if I want the condescension I received with UNITED. Having flown AMERICAN and DELTA basic economy over the last few years, the treatment you receive from them was seamless and unnoticeable, but UNITED feels the need to shove the basic economy rules and hyperbole down your throat from the moment you book your flight. I had not flown on UNITED for about 10 years and was skittish on using them again after the Dr. David Dao/United Express Flight 3411 incident and countless poor reviews online regarding their customer service. It seems not much has changed and UNITED's contempt towards it's customers is still there. This may have been my last trip on UNITED. So much for "The Friendly Skies"....

I'm flying South West Airlines next time. UA is way out of line when they charge $45 dollars for an isle seat.

I have two United credit cards. I bought a ticket to/from NYC. I still haven't a clue if I can check a bag for free or board with a carry-on for free. The flight is direct so I will just wait and see on the seat situation. United needs to better integrate the credit card benefits.

This makes me so mad!It just boils down to same fate for no consideration for the passengers.I will avoid United for the concept of same fate less service.Southwest or Alaska would be a good way to handle their portion of the passengers ,which should get smaller with this scheme!!!

They will keep doing this until some pervert molests a kid because the greedy airline put the parents 20 rows away from thier kids. Guess I will have to find another airline the actually cares about the welfare and safety of my family.

Airlines like United make so much money from first class, that they have a vested interest in making non first class passengers as uncomfortable as possible. This helps ensure people In First Class don't look back at steerage and say "that's not so bad!" This is been true for a long time, and they're expanding that model into economy itself. Making some economy seats smaller, and more uncomfortable. This is one more reason I refuse...

Their open seating model makes these sorts of games and possible.

“I guess the should just change their name to Frontier ”

@Joe no they shouldn’t. The expectations are different here. With ULCCs like Frontier, the baseline is that you’re buying a ticket with zero perks/amenities. People except nothing when they fly, so buying seats, bags, etc. are seen as an upgrade that is only available through incremental purchases. With legacy carriers people generally expect more. The idea that you’re choosing to downgrade from ‘the standard’...

The idea that you’re choosing to downgrade from ‘the standard’ for a legacy carrier and then are going to start throwing money to move yourself back to the baseline is totally different. I don’t think people are dumb enough to choose the lowest legacy BE price and then pay-up to move back to a standard ticket they probs should’ve bought in the first place.

I think the bottom line is there are of dumb people, rich people, and rich dumb people. UA is just trying to relieve them of that extra cash.

I've never ever understood what would possess someone to pay $70-200 for legroom alone but I guess some people have money to burn!

I guess the should just change their name to Frontier ;-)

@Tom Schneider UA does not permit online check-in for Basic Economy tickets. You are required to see an agent so they can verify you don't have a carry-on.

Whatever,? ! As an ex UAX employee who worked in sales, sound like they are grasping for straws to see whatever will work. So sick of them and their logic

So will this allow Basic Economy fare purchasers the opportunity to buy an Economy Plus Seating Assignment for a fee as well?

I think there were a lot of people who bought BE on Expedia and Co websites without realizing it so this is their way of trying to goose some extra revenue from them.

Wow what an amazing customer friendly enhancement! So glad that United let's me unbundle all of these services and pick and choose exactly what I want!!

@Mike Perhaps I am missing something from your comment but you can receive your boarding pass via the United App. Hell, I just used the boarding pass on the app to pass through security at IAH a few minutes ago.

$5 middle seats make sense if you have a companion with an aisle/window on a separate, non-Basic ticket. And IMO that situation is rare enough that it's rather an insult to the customer to offer for sale the inflight equivalent of shit on a stick.

$20 is a typical increment for one leg between basic and regular economy, so if you pay $15 to get an aisle seat you've now reduced your savings and given up flexibility, a carry-on and mileage earning for a whopping $5!

I need a cheap last minute round trip to EWR Spirit and united were both a 6 am departure and cost $45 a week and a half before departure (one way) I chose spirit because I can get my boarding pass on the mobile app on my way to the airport I don’t want to be “policed” at the kiosk with my personal item in order to print my boarding pass. And have to arrive 10 minutes earlier Bad move United !!!!

Haven't flown on United since the merger with Continental, so no big deal to me. I expect that at some point United with be like Allegiant, Frontier, etc charging for everything little thing they can get away with.

@chesterwilson - The irony of paying for a seat assignment pushing you to fly an airline where a seat assignment isn't even possible is not lost.

I would pay $20 for a seat in first class. Not a penny just for a regular economy seat

I would pay $5 just for "not the back row" so I guess I would pay $5 for a middle seat just to avoid that, but in reality I would pay $10 or $15 for the aisle or window toward the middle of the plane.

That I will continue to fly Southwest Airlines whenever possible.

What is United basic economy?

United has two types of economy fares: economy and basic economy .

Basic economy provides a lower-priced fare but may place restrictions on seat assignment, boarding, carry-on baggage, upgrades, changes, refunds, elite earning and elite benefits. This guide will answer common questions about these restrictions and the basic economy experience on United, but be sure to also check out Benji Stawski 's review of United's basic economy .

Note that some basic economy restrictions are waived for Star Alliance elites and cardholders of United cobranded credit cards, two of which currently offer increased bonuses. If you fall into either of these groups, see the specific section related to your group to see which restrictions are waived for you.

  • United Explorer Card : Earn 60,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
  • United Quest Card: Earn 70,000 bonus miles and 500 Premier qualifying points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
  • United Club Infinite Card: Earn 90,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • United Business Card: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.

Can I check a bag?

Yes. Baggage fees vary based on itinerary; you can calculate the fees for your flight here . If you don't have elite status with United or carry one of their credit cards, here are some examples of baggage fees:

  • Within the U.S. and Canada: $40 for the first bag ($35 if prepaid), $50 ($45 if prepaid) for the second bag, $150 for each additional bag. Between the U.S. and Europe: $75 for the first bag, $100 for the second bag, $200 for each additional bag.
  • Between the U.S. and Mexico : $40 for the first bag ($35 if prepaid), $50 for the second bag ($45 if prepaid), $150 for each additional bag.

Can I bring a carry-on?

Sometimes. For domestic flights, only one personal item such as a shoulder bag, purse, laptop bag or another item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches is allowed. Mobility aids and other assistive devices are also permitted. This item must go under the seat in front of you. Any additional items must be checked at ticket counters; if you take them to the gate you'll pay a $25 gate-service fee per item plus the applicable checked bag fee.

On transatlantic flights operated by United and United Express, your carry-on baggage allowance is the same as for standard economy tickets. This means you can bring a carry-on item that is no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches as well as a personal item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches.

Premier members of the MileagePlus program, Star Alliance Gold members and the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card, like the United Explorer Card, may bring a carry-on and a personal item onboard.

Can I select a seat?

united purchase seat assignment

Yes, but it'll cost you. Advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and until check-in opens. Selecting a seat is oftentimes reasonably priced, usually $10 on short-haul flights. However, if you don't opt to purchase a seat assignment, a seat will be automatically assigned prior to boarding, for free. You can only purchase Economy Plus seats at check-in.

United's website states that travelers on the same reservation — including families with young children — may not be able to sit together unless advance seat assignments are purchased:

"With Basic Economy, if you do not purchase advance seat assignments, we're not able to guarantee that your family will be able to sit together. If it's important for your family to sit together, please consider purchasing advance seat assignments, if available, or selecting another fare."

Why can't I check in online?

You'll only be able to check in for your flight online if you're checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight. (Note: After checking in online, go to a check-in counter or designated kiosk in the airport lobby to check your bags.) If you're not checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight, you'll need to finish checking in at the airport to prove that you don't have more than one personal item.

When can I board?

united purchase seat assignment

You'll board in the last boarding group, unless you have elite status or select credit cards. More on that in a bit. Note: Basic Economy customers with disabilities or who need assistance are allowed to pre-board.

Related: United Airlines updates its boarding process, creates new signage

Can I change my flight?

No. Changes aren't allowed with basic economy. This includes advance and same-day changes.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my flight?

Refunds are not usually allowed except as stated in the United 24-hour flexible booking policy .

Related: How to refund a nonrefundable airline ticket

Do I still earn miles?

Yes. You'll earn award miles based on the fare and your MileagePlus status, as well as full Premier qualifying points and lifetime miles, and accrue toward the four-segment minimum. However, your flights will not count as Premier qualifying flights toward elite status.

Related: United Airlines makes big changes to how we earn elite status, upgrades

Does having a cobranded credit card help?

Yes, but only if you use a cobranded United credit card to purchase your ticket, are the primary cardholder of this card at the time of check-in and provide your United MileagePlus number when you purchase the flight.

If you manage to satisfy all these requirements, you'll defeat basic economy by getting the following benefits even when flying on a basic economy fare:

  • One carry-on bag no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches for you and each of your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.
  • Priority boarding for you and your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.
  • First checked bag free for you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation when you book your tickets using your United Explorer, United Club Infinite, United Quest, United Business or United Club Business Card.
  • First and second checked bags are free for you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation when you book your tickets using one of the above cards.

The information for the United Club Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Does having elite status help?

Yes. When flying on a basic economy fare, Premier members and Star Alliance elites get the following benefits:

  • Your normal checked baggage allowance.
  • Your normal boarding group for you and your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.

However, elite status holders will not receive any of the following when flying on a basic economy fare:

  • Complimentary Economy Plus seating.
  • Complimentary upgrades.
  • Paid upgrades.
  • Mileage upgrades.
  • Upgrades using PlusPoints .

Bottom line

United Airlines basic economy fares are more restrictive and punitive than any of the other U.S. carriers. However, the United basic economy experience can be made better with elite status or an eligible cobranded United Airlines credit card when the card is used to book the flight.

So, if you haven't booked your ticket yet, or you plan to fly United basic economy again, you may want to consider getting a United Airlines credit card. Doing so now is particularly compelling due to the increased bonuses currently available:

These cards provide a carry-on bag and priority boarding in Group 2 for you and each of your companions traveling on the same reservation. Plus, you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation get your first checked bag free. These benefits of these cards easily outweigh the fees if you use them to book United basic economy fares just a few times each year.

Basic economy fares have reshaped travel, as airlines charge travelers more for what they once got free. And United basic economy fares are easily among the worst of them all.

United has the single most-punitive restriction for basic economy flyers, so it pays to be hyper-vigilant about what you get and what you don't. We gave it the lowest score in our battle of basic economy that compared all three major U.S. airlines – and it wasn't particularly close.

But why is it so bad? What do you get, and what don't you get? And how can you make United basic economy a little less painful? Let's break it down.

Basic Economy is Strict with Carry-Ons

No online check-in, either, pay up for seats, what routes have united basic economy fares, get some perks back with a united credit card, avoid a dreaded middle seat selection.

  • What's the Difference Between Basic Economy and Economy on United?

What Does United Economy Include?

What does united basic economy include, what is united basic economy.

United basic economy is much like a basic economy ticket on any other U.S. carrier: It's the airline's cheapest fare.

And while it gets you the same standard economy seat and experience once you get on the plane, it's loaded with restrictions that can make it more painful.

There's no way to spin this one: United has some of the worst basic economy fares out there of any major U.S. airline. Take a look:

  • Baggage:  Get a personal item for free; pay at least $35 each way for a checked bag (or $75 each way to Europe). No carry-ons allowed unless flying to Europe or other long-haul international destinations.
  • Seat Selection: Available for a fee, typically starting around $10. Otherwise, seats are automatically assigned at check-in.
  • Boarding: Boards the plane last in the final boarding group.
  • Earning United MileagePlus Miles: Yes, you'll earn redeemable United miles based upon the price of your ticket.
  • Earning Status: You’ll earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) but  not   Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) toward status with United.
  • Upgrades: Not eligible for complimentary upgrades with United status, nor can you pay for an extra legroom Economy Plus seat.
  • Ticket Changes and Cancellation: No free change or cancellation is allowed except within 24 hours of booking. Otherwise, you can cancel a domestic roundtrip for a voucher minus a $99 fee – or $199 for an international roundtrip ticket.

United's basic economy fares are easily the worst among the major U.S. airlines. And there are no signs that it will get any better.

Unless if you're flying to Europe or other long-haul destinations, you won't get a carry-on bag. That alone is proof that United is hoping to force flyers to pay up for a main cabin economy fare – generally another $70 to $80 or more on a roundtrip ticket within the U.S. … and a whopping $200 over to Europe and back.

Only JetBlue with its Blue Basic fares previously matched this punitive policy … and even JetBlue has wised up: Their cheapest fares will get a carry-on bag back soon .

These fares are a huge cash cow for United and other airlines. And unfortunately, basic economy fares are generally priced at what main cabin fares once were. On United and other airlines, you're paying the same amount but getting less with basic economy.

One saving grace of United basic economy? Unlike Delta basic economy , you'll still earn both redeemable United MileagePlus miles and at least some credits toward United elite status. After a brutal change in late 2021 , you no longer earn either with Delta.

Still, a few things about these fares are worth highlighting even further – some good, but mostly bad.

Let's start with the bad news: No carry-ons.

Unless you're flying across the Atlantic Ocean or to another long-haul international destination, all you get is a small personal item like a backpack when flying. And United executives say they have no plans to change this, even as both Delta and American allow carry-ons for all basic economy passengers. It's the most restrictive fare for the airline and the harshest measure of any basic economy fare in the U.S.

And that comes with a double whammy…

Because you can't bring a carry-on bag onboard, you have to finalize checking in for your flight at the airport. Yes, that's right: No online check-in when flying United basic economy.

united basic economy check in

Some travelers who purchase basic economy  might be able to check in online if they're also checking a bag. But that's a moot point: You'll have to go to the desk at the airport to check your bag, regardless.

Read more about checking in online with United!

If there's one upside to United basic economy, it's the ability to pay for a seat assignment.

The window to pay up for seat selection opens right when you book your flight – earlier than you'll find on many airlines. And the price is often right: We've seen seat selection fees as low as $10 or so a seat . Generally, seats toward the back of the plane are the cheapest. And a middle seat will almost always cost you less than an aisle or window.

Right now, United Basic Economy has been rolled out on all routes heading to the following locations:

  • U.S. Domestic Flights
  • Mexico and Central America
  • The Caribbean
  • South America

That's right: Practically every single route in United's network features basic economy at the starting point. Even ultra-long-haul flights to Singapore (SIN) and Sydney (SYD) have basic economy, though you can at least bring a carry-on bag and also get a free checked bag with these fares.

How to Beat United Basic Economy

There are no two ways about it: Flying on a United basic economy ticket can be a drag. Luckily, there are a few ways you can make it a little less painful.

The easiest way to beat some of these restrictions is by holding one of United's co-branded credit cards like the *united explorer card* .

Among the other benefits of the card, you'll be able to bring on carry-on luggage – as will any other travelers booked on your itinerary. You'll also get a checked bag for free, as will one companion else booked on your reservation.

Read more on United Airlines baggage fees !

And you'll also all get priority boarding – a significant improvement, considering United basic economy flyers typically board last.

But there's one catch: You have to pay for your ticket with the United Explorer card in order to get those benefits . It's one of the few airline credit cards that require you to pay with the card in order to get the perks.

Learn more about the  *united explorer card*

On paper, you don't get to select your seat with a United basic economy fare. But in practice, that's not quite true.

United sells seat selection to basic economy flyers for an additional fee. The window to pay up for a seat assignment is open from the moment you buy your ticket. Better yet, the fees are typically quite reasonable.

Just be warned: United may try to sell you a “bundle” with seat assignment. These typically aren't a good deal – you can buy it later for much cheaper.

united basic economy seat

So just click past it and proceed through checkout and you'll get the option to pay for a seat a la carte. Take a look at the seat map for an upcoming flight from Houston-Intercontinental (IAH) to Washington, D.C.-Dulles (IAD), and you'll see that a window seat starts at just $13. A preferred seat towards the front of the cabin, meanwhile, is $27 per passenger.

united basic economy seat

The price will vary from flight to flight, but those rates are about average. Expect to pay $10 to $20 per seat.  But keep in mind: That's a per-segment cost. So you'll have to pay double for a round-trip flight – and even more if your flight isn't nonstop.

If you want to make sure you get a certain seat, you're better off paying for an assignment right away. Not only will the number of available seats shrink as your departure approaches, but the price for a seat will likely increase, too. No matter what, you won't be able to upgrade from basic economy to an economy plus or first class seat.

And Unlike with Delta, you can't move around the cabin to get an available seat for free after the 24-hour check-in window opens when flying basic economy with United. But the ability to pay for a seat from day one is unrivaled.

That brings up an important point: You need to do the math on whether it makes sense to go for basic economy and add extra costs compared to buying a more-inclusive main cabin economy fare outright.

If a main cabin fare costs an additional $70 or more roundtrip, going for a cheaper United basic economy fare could make sense.

United Economy vs. Basic Economy

What's the difference between basic economy and economy on united.

The names may sound similar, but make no mistake: These two types of airfare are not the same. And too many United Airlines flyers find that out the hard way.

Comparing United basic economy vs economy boils down to one simple fact: United's basic economy tickets have fewer perks compared to a main cabin economy fare.

One major – and painful – difference is that with a United basic economy ticket, passengers are given a much smaller baggage allowance. United flyers with a basic economy ticket are not allowed to put a carry-on in the overhead bin – they're limited to one small personal item underneath the seat. With a normal economy fare, you can bring a normal carry-on bag onboard.

Because of that, basic economy passengers cannot check in online or via the United app. Basic economy passengers are forced to check in at the airline's counter at the airport. You also can't pick a seat for free with a United basic economy ticket, while you can with a standard economy fare.

One last notable difference comparing United basic economy vs economy comes with earning status with United. With a basic economy fare, you'll earn half the credits toward MileagePlus status as you do with a normal economy ticket: You earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) but  not Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs).

And you won't be eligible for complimentary upgrades, either.

United Economy is your standard airline fare, and it's typically more expensive than the basic economy fare. Here’s a summary of what United Economy includes:

  • Includes a carry-on 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches
  • Choose your seat for free (though some preferred seats at the front of the cabin or with extra legroom will cost you more)
  • Boarding group 3-5
  • Change your tickets for free or cancel for a credit
  • Ability to upgrade to Economy Plus seats with extra legroom or First Class
  • Able to check-in on the website online or via the United app

Along with some noticeable restrictions, here’s a final quick summary of what United Basic Economy includes:

  • Only one personal item (sized 17 inches by 10 inches by 9 inches) allowed
  • Can’t upgrade to Economy Plus or First Class
  • Seats are automatically assigned at check-in, or you can pay extra for a seat assignment
  • Last boarding group
  • Flights can be canceled for a voucher minus a $99 fee on domestic roundtrips (or $199 for long-haul international trips)
  • Unable to check-in online or via the app unless you pay for checked luggage

Bottom Line

There's no doubt about it: United basic economy fares are a pain. And given how much money the airline makes on them, they're not going away anytime soon.

They're among the most restrictive fares you'll find in the skies. While almost every other airline allows you to bring a carry-on bag while flying basic economy, United does not. And that means you can't check in online, either.

On the plus side, seat selection fees are often more than reasonable if you don't want to get stuck in a middle seat. And carrying a United co-branded credit card can make a lot of the pain of basic economy fade away.

Delta offers the ability to pay for a seat assignment on basic economy now too. Up to 24 hours before departure. Flew basic just yesterday PHX MSP and received an email two days before departure with the option to buy a seat assignment. Was only $20.

I just flew united basic economy and you are allowed to do online check in. It states you might have to wait to get assigned a seat at the airport but only one flight out of four didn’t give me a seat assignment till 2 hours before flight. Also they stated a very specific size bag that can go on and my backpack was bigger than stated but had no problem bringing it on.

I booked basic economy to Finland and I am allowed a personal item and a carry on….

That’s because it was to Europe. He said it’s allowed on international flights.

I purchased basic economy ticked from Poland to Newark NJ with the United Explorer Card. I was wondering if theres any chance to get an upgrade at the boarding counter or just pay for the upgrade on the united.com website. Anybody had luck getting the upgrade at the boarding counter?

I purchased a United basic economy fare, not aware of carry-on restriction. I never heard of such a thing. Big rip off by United. I won’t be fooled into flying this airline again.

I have realized that buying UA basic economy fare charges for carryon. I got going to chicago tickets one way was AA with free carryon then coming back was UA and I have to pay for it! Learned it the hard way, did not save at all!

How much did they charge you for your carry on?

Just got taken in by the basic economy fare. Wish I had read your excellent post first! (Since when did one of the major non-economy airlines start charging for carry-on’s!?!). There’s a reason I never liked United — and now there are more reasons.

With basic fare ( we the poor ) can’t check in and can’t have a carry on lane. Why even bother sending emails, txt message etc to check in if it’s not possible? They found a way to make more money. Next thing you won’t be able to arrive early to airport unless you pay an extra fee.

You can check in online if you check a bag. He didn’t mention that at first. I don’t think Basic Economy is that bad honestly. I’m saving $100 for my flight AND I’m checking two bags. But it’s a lot of math and calculations if you have the time.

Would love to benefit from your math and calculations. I have the time and would love to be able to check a bag while flying basic economy.

some body knows about carry on cost?

Are you allowed a small tote and a purse if traveling on UA from Chicago to Maui?

Likely just one or the other.

Just a heads up, as much as I’ve discovered that United basic economy purchasers are definitely shamed from United by making it the most restrictive ticket you can buy(like n intentional way to hit you with fees after saving on your ticket while also making sure you feel poor and humiliated on the way)- not allowing seat choice, not any single carry on except 1 purse etc, last to board so everyone knows you got a cheap ticket, and not allowing families or groups to sit together- one correction to your article is that I was able to check in online ahead of time. If your checking luggage you can then check in online, but I believe without luggage you cannot. Not sure where people are traveling with no carry on or checked bags so most people will be able to check in online and avoid doing it in person at the airport.

I fly United basic economy often. Also charge the trip on the United card. Not really a problem for me. Get my free carry-on, priority boarding and am rarely assigned a middle seat. Always able to check in on the app 24 hours before the flight. And when I do I can change my seat for free on the app. But you have to be quick. Not to a great seat but can occasionally move to an aisle or window seat or up a few rows. still stuck in row 31 or above, but it works for me.

Basic economy Newark to Dublin, what carry on am I allowed

One carry-on bag 22″ x 14″ x 9″ is allowed for Basic Economy Newark to Dublin. Also one personal item.

I booked a Basic Economy flight from Boston to Denver and then later paid for a seat choice. I am not sure now which class that puts me in. The question is am I allowed a carry on along with my personal item now?

No, you’ll still be unable to bring a carry-on bag despite paying for a seat assignment.

We have the United Explorer card. According to the fine print, only the card holder and one companion can bring a carry on and check one piece of luggage for free. Everyone else on the reservation must stick to the 1 personal item and pay for checked bags.

HI, considering that if the UA flight is transcontinental, hand luggage is allowed in Basic economy, does anyone know/has experienced whether it is also possible to check in online? Thanks to whoever will respond

If you’re a United MileagePlus member without a co-branded United credit card , we’ve got some good news.

Chase and United have a robust selection of co-branded credit cards, including 4 different personal cards and 2 small business card options: United Quest℠ Card , United Gateway℠ Card , United℠ Explorer Card , United Club℠ Infinite Card , United Club℠ Business Card, and United℠ Business Card .

Historically, those who hold any one of the above cards have been able to access additional award seat space that others couldn’t. More specifically, United granted its cardholders the ability to purchase any seat on the plane using their miles — whether there was regular award availability or not.

Now, that same access has been granted to all United MileagePlus members . This may represent a devaluation to those who’ve used such availability in the past to purchase seats but can spell great news for those who don’t have a United credit card.

Keep in mind, however, that although you can now purchase these seats, they can be exorbitantly expensive, especially when inventory on a flight is low. Take a look at the cost for an economy class flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Frankfurt (FRA):

United mileage award cost LAX-FRA

70,000 United miles for an economy flight to Europe is outrageous — and may be more than a Saver-level business class flight. So although it’s now bookable, it doesn’t necessarily make sense to spend your miles on these flights.

Be aware, however, that pricing can change depending on what kind of elite status and credit cards you’ve got. United maintains additional Saver-level inventory for its elite members and cardholders. Take a look at what happens when we log in as a Premier 1K elite:

United mileage award cost LAX-FRA elite member

The cost drops to less than half because, as elite members, Premier 1Ks have additional access to that cheaper inventory. Keep that in mind while you search for your seats.

Hot Tip: Our helpful guides review the value of United elite status prior to departure and at the airport , as well as the perks and benefits for seating and upgrades .

This is good news for those who don’t have a United credit card, though how useful it’ll be will depend on how many United miles you’ve got to spend. It can certainly be of aid when you’ve got very inflexible flight dates or need a certain number of seats for your trip. Just be aware that costs can easily pile up when you’re looking to book these flights.

Worried about a middle seat with that basic economy ticket? Reserve a seat — for a fee

Two days before my American Airlines flight from Chicago to Las Vegas in June, I checked the airline's website to see how much they wanted for a seat assignment.

Yes, a seat assignment.

I was traveling on a basic economy ticket , and those no-frills tickets don't come with an advance seat assignment and carry other restrictions. The airline assigns you one at check in, so you never know where you'll end up on the plane.

Basic economy passengers who are afraid of getting stuck in a middle seat, or being separated from their traveling companions, have the option of selecting a seat for a fee. It's no different than the system used by discount airlines Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant , whose bare bones fares inspired major airlines to add basic economy tickets.

The window for buying a seat with a basic economy ticket varies by carrier: United allows the purchase of a seat assignment during booking, while Delta and American only sell seats to basic economy passengers a week before the flight. Until July 2, American only allowed purchase 48 hours in advance on domestic flights. (American passengers buying international basic economy tickets can buy a seat when booking.)

My ticket to Las Vegas fell under the 48-hour policy. At that time, American's seat map showed a few options: a handful of $9 seats, including a couple of aisle seats and a couple of window seats and a few rows of "preferred'' seats closer to the front of the plane but without any extra legroom or other perks. The going rate for 17D, a "preferred'' aisle seat: $31. The priciest choice: $62 for an aisle seat in the exit row, one of American's Main Cabin Extra seats featuring more legroom and free drinks.

There were no high-pressure tactics to get me to buy one. A note at the top of the seat map said: "If you don't want to pay for your seats now, we'll assign seats after you check in.''

I passed on all, as I usually do, on principle. (I also refuse to pay for Southwest Airlines' early bird boarding, one of the airline's versions of a seat fee.)

As a solo traveler, I've had good luck snagging an aisle seat on the basic economy flights I've booked. Until this trip.

The bad news greeted me when I checked in online: A middle seat. For 3 ½ hours.

I wasn't worried about arm-rest hogs as much as I was about jumping over someone every time I had to use the restroom.

I didn't want to take my chances on a seat change at the airport on a Saturday in the middle of summer travel season , so I paid for a seat last minute. The $9 seats were long gone. I sprung for one of the Main Cabin exit row seats with free drinks they had peddled a couple of days before. It was a whopping $46, cheaper than it was when initially offered but still a fortune on a flight that was $200 one way in basic economy. The only reason I paid and didn't suck it up in a middle seat: I discovered remaining airline fee credits so I was reimbursed for the charge. (But that's another story.)

Lesson learned: Buy a seat the first time it's offered if a middle seat is going to ruin your vacation. Otherwise, save the money. My advice is exactly the same when you encounter seat-selection fees on a regular economy ticket. The fees are  everywhere, and the prices are on the rise .

Basic economy seat fees: four things to know

1)  You don't have to pay for a seat assignment.  Airlines will assign you a seat for free when you check in online or get to the airport. You might not like the seat, and you will likely be separated from anyone traveling with you. Airlines say they block seats together for basic economy passengers traveling with young children, but travelers report varying success; ask at the airport or play the "will you trade seats with me?'' game on the airplane. The latter is becoming more difficult as passengers who have paid a fee for a particular seat (basic economy or regular economy) are reluctant to give it up.

2)  Seat fees vary by airline, flight, route, row and other factors. For a basic economy ticket from Los Angeles to Chicago in September, United last week was quoting seat fees from $12-$51 per person one way. The low end got you a middle seat or a window seat near the back of the plane, with an aisle seat there fetching $18. The $51 fee was an aisle seat in row 15. No extra legroom or other perks.

Delta was charging a flat $29 one-way fee for a seat assignment on an Atlanta-New York flight this week.

American wanted $10-$43 one way for seats on a Dallas-Las Vegas flight this week.

3)  Do the math . Basic economy tickets are designed for price-sensitive travelers. Airlines do their best to scare passengers from buying them during booking, with pop-up windows and alerts galore about the restrictions, including no seat assignment, and listing the price difference over a less-restrictive regular economy ticket.

The gap between basic economy and regular economy varies widely. Sometimes the savings are well worth it, even with seat fees. In other cases, hefty seat fees can eat up any savings over a regular economy ticket.

Take the United flight from Los Angeles to Chicago: The fare difference between basic economy and regular economy was $80 round trip. Paying $13 each way for an aisle seat would still put you ahead $54. (Note, though, that United is the only airlines that forbids basic-economy passengers from bringing a standard carry-on bag . Only personal items that fit underneath the seat are allowed, and the policy is strictly enforced.)

Conversely, paying Delta $29 each way for a seat assignment on the Atlanta-New York trip would wipe out the $40 round trip savings between basic economy and regular economy.

My one-way American basic economy ticket from Chicago to Las Vegas was $35 cheaper than regular economy. A $9 seat fee would have still made it a deal, the $45 I ended up paying, not so much.

One challenge here for ticket shoppers: only United lets you see the basic economy seat fees in advance on its website (though American does if it's an international flight.) So if assigned seats are critical to you, do the math using samples from this story..

4)  Buying a regular economy ticket instead of a basic economy ticket does NOT guarantee you will get your pick of seats without paying a fee.

In their side-by-side comparisons of basic economy versus regular economy tickets on their websites, American, United and Delta each tout the opportunity to select your seat as a benefit of regular economy tickets.

Read closely though and you'll see the qualifiers: American says "fee may apply,'' Delta says you can select "available seats'' and United says "complimentary seat assignments are offered when available.''

Depending on the flight and how far in advance you book, your only choices might be a free middle seat, or there may not be two seats together. The flights I spot-checked had free seats available when buying a regular economy ticket, but plenty of the seats were for sale.

Seat fees have become so prevalent, many travelers mistakenly think they are getting more legroom, a cushier seat or other perks by paying the fee. Those perks are reserved for travelers paying an even higher fare or seat price.

Since the flight is operated by Lufthansa you can't choose the seats on the United Website. You are redirected to the Lufthansa website. on the LH.com website you find a note :

"Conditions of your ticket do not allow for seat reservations on LH.com. Please contact our service center at:

1-800-645-3880 or select seats during check-in."

I called the number and the LH rep told me that an advanced seat reservation is $40 per seat, or get free seat assignments 23 hour before departure. I told her that I bought the more expensive ticket so that I can choose my seats. We are a family of four and want to sit together and we don't want to sit next to the lavatory. The LH rep basically told me that I can pay for the seats or complain with United.

Called back United, they said they can't do anything because the Lufthansa rules apply.

So here I paid United $150/ticket extra to get advanced seat assignments and then Lufthansa wants to charge me an additional fee of $40/ticket.

Basically the airlines want me to pay TWICE for ONE advanced seat assignment.

Any advice how to resolve this issue?

' class=

Other than pay Lufthansa to select seats, no. You can argue more with united that they didn’t make the seat assignment policy clear but I don’t think it’ll get you anywhere. Economy has more advantages over basic economy than just seat selection so I think United will say they provided what you bought, an economy ticket. You’re getting the free bag plus ability to change for the extra cost.

united purchase seat assignment

Fares have become very complicated as to what is included. You really have to check out all of the details before purchasing, as things change for many reasons. Domestic and international rules can be different, such as you get one free bag on UA for an international trip in Economy ( I believe BE pays $60 for the first bag) but not domestic, unless you fly in a higher class (BC or FC), have their credit card, or other status. Seat assignments are tricky as to when you get free seat assignments in advance and when you don't. Most European airlines seem to charge for advance seat assignments.

Certainly gets confusing but from my experiences with codeshares, especially on UA, I don't think you're going to win any arguments with UA or LH.

"With economy: Complimentary seat assignments are only offered when available on United and United Express flights . There may be a charge for Economy seat assignments on our partner airlines ."

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

seat assignment question: United operated by Lufthansa

I'm researching multi-city flights from seattle-venice, rome-seattle for Spring 2020. Premium economy is not available for the dates I'm looking at on Lufthansa. However, on the United site I can find flights operated by Lufthansa and am given the opportunity to select premium economy. However, the United site won't allow me to select seats. It tells me "Advance seat assignments are not available on united.com for this flight. After completing your purchase, you can visit the operating airline’s website for additional information." That makes me feel less-than-confident that we would actually land in premium economy and might, instead, end up in regular economy. Please share your experience with this type of booking! Thanks!

I think your seat-class fear is unfounded, but I don’t have that specific experience. I do know from actual experience that within two days of purchase (and maybe even in your final Ticket Receipt, without effort) you will be able to get Lufthansa’s Confirmation Code and work with your booking.

When the Lufthansa site warned me that I was about to be transferred to the United site to accomplish seating for a United-sold, Lufthansa-operated flight (2019), I closed that browser window and went with the United site and the United confirmation code. It worked fine.

Thanks, Tim. My mind is saying, "If Lufthansa says there are no premium economy seats for those flights how can United sell me premium economy seats?"

This is pretty much standard. When you book a flight on Airline A for a seat on a flight that's actually operated by their partner Airline B, it's usually not possible to select seats on the Airline B flight from Airline A's website. That is, United can typically see and allows seat selection only on their own (and maybe a few other partner carriers') flights; flying on other airlines' planes you need to access the operating airline's booking engine to choose seats. That's because despite all marketing spin, different airlines' systems are not very well integrated.

In your case, United will be happy to book you a ticket that includes a seat on a Lufthansa plane. United will give you their own (United) confirmation number, but that's probably useless when dealing with Lufthansa's website or other Lufthansa systems. You need to get the Lufthansa confirmation number for your flight. You can typically get that by logging in to your United account and drilling down into the details of your booking. Or you can just call United and ask them for it (you will need to give United your United booking number).

You need that number to make changes to your flight, check in online, pick seats, maybe choose a meal, buy an extra bag, etc. That booking number is quite important, always have it handy. This is especially true when booking award seats with frequent flyer points.

Typically to do any of these things, you go to the operating airline's website, log in there with your booking number and your last name (surname), under things that are usually labeled "manage my flight." Most airlines work this way. Good luck.

Thanks, David. So, what happens if United sells me a premium economy seat and Lufthansa doesn't have any of those seats left? Should I assume, if the Lufthansa site says they're sold out, that we're going to be bumped into a different class?

If United sells you a ticket for a specific class of seat on a partner airline, I would certainly expect that kind of seat to be available, and I wouldn't worry much about booking. Book the ticket, call United and get the Lufthansa booking number, then within the first 24 hours (might be important) go to the Lufthansa website and see if you can log in there and pick your seat. Note that it might take a few hours for your ticket booked on united.com to gell and become accessible on Lufthansa's system, so don't freak out if you can't access it just a few minutes after your booking. Once you are able to log in at Lufthansa's website and access your flight there, see if you can choose your seat. Some fare classes (ticket prices) may or may not include the ability to choose a specific seat - beware anything that sounds like "basic economy" as those sub-economy fares usually come with lots of annoying limitations, like no picking your seat (that's why they're cheap).

If you do not see any seats in the class of service that you paid for, call United. I would expect that they would refund your money if you call within 24 hours.

Note the timing carefully - the itinerary booked on United may take a few hours to appear and become accessible on the Lufthansa website, but you may have only 24 hours to cancel with United if you do not see the seats you were expecting. So, you may have to wait a bit (maybe 12 hours?) before checking on the Lufthansa website, but don't wait more than 24 hours or you may not be able to cancel easily with United.

In my experience, when booking a partner flight via United's website, it does take a few hours before the partner airline's booking number becomes available, and may take a few more hours before you can use that on their website.

Caveat: I've always been able to get the partner booking number, and then access my flight info on the partner website (after short delays for both). That has worked for me on multiple United partners, including (I think) on Lufthansa. But things change (and I've never booked a "basic economy" flight), so no 100% guarantees. I'm pretty sure you should be OK though. Good luck.

if the Lufthansa site says they're sold out, that we're going to be bumped into a different class?

That's a question for United. Read the booking details v-e-r-y carefully. Make sure there are no asterisks or other teeny "gotcha" indicators hinting at some sort of exception. Be careful about this: United likes to sell "mixed" itineraries - ie you pay for a "business class ticket" from Portland to Frankfurt, but if you look carefully, you may find that this itinerary has two legs: first leg from Portland to Seattle is in Business class (as you expect), but the long leg of the flight from Seattle to Frankfurt may be in coach (a nasty surprise). So-called "mixed" itineraries should always be indicated.

I would be surprised (but not gobsmacked) if United sold you a "Premium Economy" ticket to Italy that included one or more legs that were not in Premium Economy (which different airlines call different names).

If there are no Premium Economy (or its equivalent) seats on one leg, I would not expect to be bumped up to a better class.

You could also check seatguru.com (you'll need the airline, specific flight number and date) to see what the seat layout for the plane is. Caution though, seatguru is not always accurate - and there's always a chance of an aircraft type swap at a later time.

Bottom line: check to see what United's refund policy is before you book. IME they usually give you 24 hours to cancel at no cost, but read the details carefully to know what your options are.

Unfortunately, I don't remember which other airline was involved (it could have been KLM rather than Lufthansa), but within the very last few years I bought a regular coach-class ticket (not basic economy) to Europe through the United website with the flight actually being operated by a European carrier. That UA was not operating the flight was clear on both Google Flights and the United website.

When I went to the KLM-or-Lufthansa website after my purchase to select a seat, I found it was impossible to do so, although I did have the operating carrier's record locator number. I got the same answer when I telephoned the European airline. Apparently there's a missing electronic link somewhere that makes it impossible to select a seat in advance if you've purchased your ticket from United. It turned out OK for me, because I was able to get an aisle seat when I checked in 24 hours in advance, but it was a very nerve-wracking experience. It would have been much worse for people with more specific seating needs than mine.

So I would suggest further research on this. My bet is that this problem has been discussed on FlyerTalk. Or perhaps calling Lufthansa might yield useful information. Being a pessimist about such matters, though, I would tend to believe oral information from Lufthansa only if it was bad news. I'd want to find any good news (i.e., assurance that a seat can be selected shortly after ticket purchase) in print somewhere.

"There is absolutely no excuse in this day and age for forcing people who buy tickets three or four months in advance to wait until 23 hours before the flight to be able to choose what seats they have."

That's not true for LH's Premium Economy. I was able to select my seat for a recent flight when booking 8 months ago.

Sadly, people seem to respond without even really reading the question. I thought the best answer you received was from the person who said to check the details carefully for each leg of the flight before you purchase the ticket. Also, be aware that sometimes airlines use different terms for different levels of service. Economy Comfort doesn't always equate to Premium Economy, etc. Perhaps Lufthansa calls its service something else than United calls it, or it could be another level of service entirely.

I may be a bit paranoid, but I believe that the airlines are doing their best to confuse travelers about what class of services they are actually purchasing. “Economy” has morphed into several different tiers, with different names. Example: I have started tracking prices for a trip we will take next August, SFO >VNO, HEL > SFO. The best prices I’ve been seeing, with just one connection, are running around $1250. We usually purchase the upgrade to economy+ (United’s lingo) for the outbound, transatlantic segment, not the same as “Premium Economy.” Skyscanner is showing prices under $1000 on KLM, so I went to that site. All looked good when I chose appropriate flights, except a proviso that no bags could be checked, not even at an extra charge. This leads me to think that KLM’s “economy” may be the equivalent of united’s “basic economy,” which also includes the downside of no seat selection. I could not see any other economy tier. Delta has also introduced a class between economy and business but I think it, like United’s is not the same as the simple, and not so expensive, option of paying for seats with a little more leg room. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me for consumers to expect clear statements, at the start if the reservation process, of what each class of service, however labeled, entails and consistency, at least among code-sharers in the labeling of their offerings.

Many European carriers nowadays offer only "basic economy" etc. via resellers. It should be up to the resellers to mark that fact clearly and not to hide it as much as possible.

Just did this sort of thing for our flight to Paris spring 2020 and it worked fine.

@sla019 Actually, I was on the KLM website. You’ve offered good information, though. It makes choosing a flight more complicated. All the more reason to wish for consistency, at least among code sharers.

Unable to purchase seating assignment

I have an upcoming flight next month out of Orlando into Frankfurt booked via United, flight was originally operated by Lufthansa, now it’s on a Finnair plane- operated by Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Discover. For whatever reason, I’m unable to reserve seating on the flight- I’m told by EWD I will be assigned seating at check in (23 hours prior to flight).

If given the option I’d be purchasing economy comfort seats- I’m concerned I’m going to be stuck with middle section seating toward the rear of the plane.

Also- I’m traveling with my wife and she’s concerned that we may not even be seated together. Is this a legit concern?

What are my chances of getting preferred or extra legroom seating at check in?

One of the main restrictions on basic economy tickets has been that you can't select a seat assignment in advance. United sells seat selection to basic economy flyers for an additional fee. The window to pay up for a seat assignment is open from the moment you buy your ticket. Better yet, the fees are typically quite reasonable. Just be warned: United may try to sell you a "bundle" with seat assignment.

UA should (probably) be able to assign a seat if you call them. They should also be able to tell you your UA record locator, which should (probably) allow you to manage it yourself. The only wildcard would be if you have a codeshare -- an LH flight number on your UA-operated flight. That can throw a wrench into the situation.
