Sugarloaf Sailing Club

Sail with us, we welcome guests to join our club or to crew on our boats.

We are an enthusiastic group of people who enjoy the safe enjoyment of sailing as a social and recreational activity on the warm waters of Lake Erie.

The beautiful Sugarloaf Marina in Port Colborne, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Erie is our headquarters. From this location, one can enjoy day sailing or longer cruises to destinations at Point Abino, Buffalo and Dunkirk to the East, or Port Maitland, Port Dover, Erie,Pa. and other Lake Erie ports to the West.

Whether you own a sailboat, would like to crew for someone that has a boat, or are new to sailing and want to learn more, we welcome you to our Club. By being a club member, you will have exclusive access to events, notices and benefits that far exceed the cost of membership.

We have regular Wednesday Night Sailing that provides for sailing a course around marker buoys that will challenge both new and experienced sailors. While traditionally this has been ‘race night’, the focus in 2022 is for it to be ‘cruise night’ to enable the widest participation and just to have fun and “re-socialize” after the past two years of pandemic restrictions. We meet at the ‘Rec Deck’ after sailing to socialize, and enjoy hot dogs and libations.

In 2022, subject to interest, we plan to add another regular weekly sailing event – perhaps Sunday morning or afternoon, followed by a social time at the ‘Rec Dec’. This will double the number of opportunities to get out sailing and to enjoy each others company both on and off the water.

In 2022, subject to interest, we plan to organize cruises to Point Abino and Port Dover. Cruising to another port offers the opportunity to enjoy the safety and camaraderie of like minded sailors, both on the water and in the destination port.

Port Colborne is on the Lake Erie Inter Club Regatta itinerary. The Regatta has been a Lake Erie tradition for many years and starts in Erie, Pa., travels to Port Dover, Port Colborne, and Point Abino. It is held the last week of June, and makes its return after a two-year hiatus due to the Pandemic. Details can be found at: https://www.erieinterclub.com/

Nearly all private yacht clubs around the lakes require visitors to be members of a reciprocal club. This allows our members to enjoy the hospitality of the member clubs on a reciprocal basis.

Sugarloaf Sailing Club is a non-profit incorporated entity dedicated to:

• Developing and fostering the sport of sailing
• Promoting and encouraging the development of good seamanship, navigational knowledge and sailing skills
• Arranging sailing competitions and cruising regattas, some with prizes, awards and distinctions being given after the event or at our Annual General Meeting and Christmas party.
• Organizing and sponsoring social events for the pleasure and accommodation of members and guests
• Participating in reciprocal agreements with other sailing clubs that provide visitor access and benefits

Lake Erie is the smallest of the Great Lakes by volume. It receives its water from Lake Huron to the north via the St. Clair River. Approximately 2 dozen islands in Lake Erie, countless ports, harbours, anchorages and beaches  make for incredible Cruising experiences.

Long Point  

Long Point is a favourite destinatin for sailors and motor cruisers alike. It is a 40 kilometer stretch of sand and marshes and, what many don't know, it is the heart of the UNESCO-recognized biosphere in Norfolk County.  The eastern end of Long Point is protected as a national wildlife area by the federal government. Visitors are not permitted except at the very tip, where there's a lighthouse, only reachable by boat.

Long Point Bay, divided into Inner Bay and Outer Bay, lie to the nort of Long Point. Towns along this side of Long Point include Port Rowan, Turkey Point and Port Dover, home to the Long Point Bay Yacht Club.

 If you have ventured to "the point" of Long Point, you are half way to Erie!  The shortest distance to the shores of Pennsylvania is approximately 23.5 miles.  Aside from the easily avoidable Bluff's Bar and the shallow waters off the tip of Long Point, you should have nothing but clear sailing or motoring! 

Remember, this sail will take a little more planning. Everyone traveling with you will need a Passport! If your boat is over 30', you will be required to purchase a CBP decal. Additional information can be found at the  DTOPS website . And once you arrive, or 4 hours before if you have Nexxus, don't forget to check in! 

Erie is the home of many festivals and special events including  Erie Days  and  Roar on the Shore but no matter when you go, you're bound to have a great time.

Port Stanley

 Port Stanley is a historical working fishing and tourist village on the North shore of Lake Erie.

Port Colborne is at the foot of the Welland Canal and rich in marine history. Its historic shopping districts, beach access, and many natural attractions make it a great port to visit.

• FCYC/SPCC visiting guests will be extended privileges to visit the Club a maximum of twice (2) month. Should an FCYC/SPCC member continue to request access to the facilities, they will be asked to join the Club.
• Access to the downtown clubhouse will be permitted based on space. No access will be permitted to the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse.
• FCYC/SPCC are required to make reservations at our downtown location.
• FCYC/SPCC are permitted to make a dining reservation for a maximum of four (4) people at one table. Larger parties are at the discretion of St Petersburg Yacht Club.
• FCYC/SPCC members are permitted to use the Central Ave valet entrance if space permits. Self-parking will not be available.
• All reciprocal clubs will see an additional 5% service charge.
• Reciprocal members will be extended privileges to visit the Club a maximum of twice (2) annually. Should a reciprocal club member continue to request access to the facilities, they will be asked to join the Club.
• Dining reservations must be made in advance. We will do our best to accommodate a reciprocal member, however, will be unable to honor reservation requests made within forty-eight (48) hours.
• The Club will not honor walk-in reciprocal club members.
• Reciprocal club members are permitted to make a dining reservation for a maximum of four(4) people at one table. Larger parties are at the discretion of St Petersburg Yacht Club.
• Reciprocal member use for private event rooms in December and February will be determined on a case-by-case basis. We will yield to first accommodating our own member requests.
• Reciprocal Club members are permitted to use the Central Ave valet entrance if space permits. Self-parking will not be available.
