History of Prout

Prout Catamarans, established in 1954 by Francis and Roland Prout in Canvey Island, Essex, UK, started as a small family-run business. Initially focusing on folding canoes, the Prout brothers soon shifted their focus to catamarans, which quickly became their signature craft. Their innovative designs and quality craftsmanship paved the way for a range of successful models, including the Quest and Ranger series.During the 1970s and 1980s, Prout Catamarans gained an international reputation, with over 4,300 catamarans constructed, making them one of the world's leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans. The success of these designs was attributed to their blend of performance, safety, and comfort. Their models, such as the Prout Snowgoose 37, became iconic, widely admired for their seaworthiness and practicality for long-distance cruising.Despite their industry acclaim, the company experienced financial difficulties in the late 1990s, ultimately leading to the company’s closure in 2001. Though Prout Catamarans no longer operates as it once did, the legacy of their innovative and durable designs continues to influence modern catamaran construction. Prout catamarans (UK) have have a history going back 50 years, with a reputation for tough, high quality, popular design and excellent ocean going capability. Roland and Francis Prout were successful canoeists who paddled for Great Britain in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. Soon after, they decided to tie two of their sleek cold-moulded kayaks together with bamboo poles resulting in an efficient high-speed sailing craft. The Prout business grew from those successful experiments in 1954 to the most famous and well respected catamaran producing company in the world, picking up a ‘Queens award for industry’ along the way. In 1964 it was a Prout catamaran that became the first multi-hull to circumnavigate the globe.

There were more Prout catamarans circumnavigating the world than any other design at one time. All Prout catamarans are designed and constructed by yachtsmen to combine technology with traditional boat building skills. Prout Catamarans was the first boat builder in the UK to receive Lloyds ISO 9002 quality standard recognition. Prout prides themselves in keeping in touch with owners through an excellent after-sales service and a strong owners association.

Prout 35 Snowgoose (Chesapeake Bay)

S/V Other Goose is a 1980 Prout 35 Custom Snowgoose, built in Britain and sailed over by the first owner to the southern Caribbean. We are the second owners and have sailed her from the southern Caribbean to the head of the Great Lakes and back to the Bahamas several times.

She is stable, solid and reliable in any conditions. 35 feet long by 16.5 foot beam. Weight 13000lbs., [ solid fibreglass hull and decks – no coring]. She has a kevlar t rampoline, not a hard front deck.

Boat is in great condition with new rig, main sail and 3YM Yanmar diesel [2200 hours].…

Prout 45 (Florida)

Lovely example of a classic Prout Catamaran. Privately owned and never chartered, this catamaran is a three cabin owners’ version. The owners’ suite is to starboard. 

The 45S Prout incorporates heavy duty Keels on each hull that protects the boat from groundings, protects the propellers and rudders, and allows the boat to beached for maintenance! 

This Catamaran is set up for extended and independent cruising and live aboard with the addition of 2800watts of solar panels, Relion Lithium Batteries, 300ft of main anchor chain, 2- life rafts, custom extended (2′) sugar scoops, all new AC’s and electronics, new Running rigging, etc.…

Prout 45 (Grenada)

S/V Mirounga is a 1997 Prout 45 three/four berth owner’s Version catamaran for sale by owner. She was designed to be the ultimate ocean-cruising catamaran in comfort and safety. Designed by David Feltham and built from 1995 by Prout Catamarans on Canvey Island. She is solid fiberglass under the waterline, cored above the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcement. The original Prout Catamarans are renowned for their safety, load-carrying capabilities, reliability, ease of handling and comfort, and were designed for long-term liveaboard cruising and ocean passages.

Port Hull Mirounga has an interior layout based on the standard family version.…

What another great listing for Boatshed Cornwall. This Prout Snowgoose Elite catamaran has been listed for sale here in Cornwall. This is the updated version of the standard Snowgoose 37 with a slightly wider beam.

"PRICE REDUCED"

This catamaran was found afloat on the pontoon mooring and first impressions suggested a yacht that had been kitted out for some long passage-making. Once onboard, it appeared to have many improvements, particularly with the navigation fit out.

Other things of note are; Renewed engine (2011) Renewed standing rigging (2011) Renewed sails (2012) Renewed fuel tank (2011)

Overall, it would seem there has been a lot invested in this Prout Snowgoose Elite and it is understood to reflect a plan to sail to Portugal. However, COVID managed to spoil those plans. This seems to be a well cared for yacht and is a fine example, although some may not appreciate the interior decor.

Still worth a viewing though, if you are interested in catamarans.
