Launched today at the Cannes Yachting Festival , the newcomer has the same clean lines and deep-V hull of its larger predecessors but can be fitted with the wraparound fender of the smaller tenders “for those seeking more practical applications.”

Practicality is also central to the yacht’s layout. The aft deck is equipped with two separate sunbeds instead of a giant central sun pad to further maximize the amount of space. The deck is also fitted with wings that can open out to create an additional 65 square feet of room.

That’s not the only spot for lounging, either. The upper cockpit sports plush seating for eight, plus a couple of forward-facing bench seats that can accommodate four more seafarers. Below, the generous open-plan living quarters include a double bed, a large couch, and a bathroom with a separate shower. As Wally puts it, it’s the “ultimate weekender pied-a-terre.”

The yard also says that a Wally isn’t a Wally if it doesn’t perform on the water. To that end, the wallypower50 is equipped with twin Volvo Penta IPS650s that give it a top speed of 36 knots and a range of 240 nautical. The more potent “X” variant packs quad 400 hp Mercury outboards that allow the yacht to hit an exhilarating 48 knots at full tilt and maintain the same range. Thrillseekers can also opt for a “Racing” configuration with 500 hp Mercurys that can push the vessel to speeds in excess of 50 knots, though its range does drop down to 180 nautical miles.

Perhaps the newcomer has filled a speed gap, too.

WallyPower 118

WallyPower 118

One glimpse was all it took. My friend’s young son caught sight of the WallyPower, a 118-foot triple-turbine-powered yacht, and he was hooked. She is a futuristic craft that makes boys shout “wow” and turns old men into boys who whisper “wow” right along with them.

Once you’re aboard, the excitement continues. Standing in the faceted black-glass jewel that is the WallyPower’s pilothouse, listening to the three TF50 gas turbines spool up to their combined 16,800 horsepower, yields a massive rush of adrenaline, testosterone and every other natural stimulant you can name. As the WallyPower cuts through 3-foot seas at 55 knots and carved turns like a classic speedboat, every one of the 20 people aboard with me was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning. The biggest grin of all was worn by Luca Bassani, the innovative founder of Wally Yachts and the driving force who developed the concept for the WallyPower.

As the WallyPower cuts through 3-foot seas at 55 knots and carved turns like a classic speedboat, every one of the 20 people aboard with me was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.

When I finally had the chance to try out the WallyPower, during my third trip aboard, her details remained clear in my mind. As the gas turbines were clutched into gear and Bassani pushed her ever faster, I could appreciate all that power beneath our feet, gulping tons of water and pushing it out the transom into a trio of geysers behind us. As we sliced through the waves, I could picture the flow along her sleek, unadorned hull bottom.

If anything surprised me, it was how quiet it was inside WallyPower, given her speed and horsepower, and the minimum of soft surfaces-carpets, curtains, sofas and such-that normally help absorb sound within a yacht’s cabins. Idling in the harbor under diesel power at 6 knots, with the deckhouse doors open forward and aft, sound at the helm was 62 decibels. Once we’d closed the doors and cranked the turbines to full power, the sound crept up to a high of 76 decibels, with conversation still possible at a very reasonable level. Vibration was basically nonexistent at any speed. It appeared that the isolation between the hull and the interior was performing well.

Less surprising was the finished interior of the yacht. If you are familiar with Wally’s precedent-setting sailboats, you know that they are minimalist, yet very attractive and functional. The WallyPower builds on the soft beige of teak and the pure black of carbon fiber to create a contrast complemented by loose cushions and modern furnishings in the same hues.

WallyPower 118

The WallyPower has three en suite queen-berth staterooms below, the master at the bow and a guest stateroom on each side of the central passageway. Amidships are two crew cabins, each with upper-and-lower berths, which share a head. One additional en suite cabin, with upper-and-lower berths, can be used by the captain, crew or guests. Opposite the crew cabins is a spacious and well-equipped galley. Though the WallyPower resembles a day boat in some ways, she is fully capable of providing the necessary comfort for longer trips and extended stays aboard.

The main deck is where this yacht and the ever-reaching mind of Bassani really shine. Credit must also be given to Lazzarini Pickering Architects, which worked with Bassani on the design. Like a big center-console runabout, the WallyPower is open fore and aft, port and starboard, with an uninterrupted view all around the horizon from the helm and the adjoining dining table. Head down a couple steps to the saloon, and you have a more private feeling as you sink into the loose cushions that line the periphery of the space. If the weather’s nice and you want something a little more open, slide the after doors apart, swing up the gull-wing door forward, and drop the outward-hinging sections of the bulwarks port and starboard. The interior’s teak sole blends with that of the open areas at either end to create an effect akin to a massive stem-to-stern sunpad.

Such groundbreaking projects are never without flaws. The yacht has not achieved the 70 knots that was bandied about prior to her construction, but without the extra people on board and once everything is dialed in, she should crack 60 knots. That’s still quick-she is, after all, a very big yacht. The engineroom is cramped, no question, but future versions of this design are offered with twin diesels instead of a complicated combination power plant, and will operate at a more sedate 40 to 50 knots. That’s fast enough for lots of excitement, and even at rest, the WallyPower is a very enjoyable yacht. Count me in.

118 WallyPower, a stealthy superyacht for billionaire owners..

wallypower yacht

The 118 WallyPower is a 36 m superyacht built by the famous Wally shipyard in the 2000s. With its futuristic military inspired look and its 3 large gas turbines, she was a UFO when she was launched.

Chloé Torterat

A futuristic construction

The 118 WallyPower is the largest motor yacht produced by the famous Monegasque shipyard Wally Yachts . It was built in the early 2000's according to the drawings of Luca Bassani for a client who wanted a motor yacht inspired by the 27 m sloop built by the shipyard and with the Argentinean naval architect Frers, called Tiketitan.

wallypower yacht

Luca Bassani Antivari, founder of Wally and an accomplished former sailor is passionate about sailing. But through this project of a 36 m superyacht, he will launch the Wallytender, then the 118 WallyPower.

Its angular lines associated with the glass superstructure are reminiscent of a stealth ship. The result is a sense of power and speed . In fact, Wally's founder describes it as ".. a stealth bomber with a sailboat bow, Formula One-style air intakes and a stripped-down Asian-inspired interior design."

wallypower yacht

An exceptional motorization

The engines - i.e. 3 gas turbines of 5?600 CH each - develop a total of 16?800 CH (12?500 kW). They power a Rolls-Royce Kamewa jet-type transmission consisting of 2 steerable side jets and a fixed central jet. Two 370 HP (280 kW) Cummins diesel engines can take over from the turbines. In the first configuration, the 118 WallyPower will reach more than 60 knots (110 km/h), but only 9 knots in the second version, which will be preferred for long distance manoeuvres.

wallypower yacht

State-of-the-art construction

The hull of the 118 WallyPower is the result of an extensive research and development program that included tests in the hull tank in Gothenburg, Sweden and in the wind tunnel at Ferrari in Maranello, Italy . Stability at high speed is guaranteed by a deep V-shaped hull (22° degrees) and a wave piercing straight bow. The air intakes of the gas turbines have been optimized to minimize vibration and exhaust backflow on deck and into the hull. The hull conceals a tender garage.

wallypower yacht

The bottom of the hull is constructed of monolithic fibreglass. The dead works with a hybrid of balsa sandwich and fiberglass/carbon. The deck is made of Nomex (Kevlar honeycomb)/carbon. The superstructure of the deck is made of a carbon frame on which glass panels are glued. Inside, part of the interior layout is made of carbon to reduce weight. The dark green metallic paint changes with the reflections of the changing lights and landscape. On the deck, in the cockpit, the bulwarks tilt to enjoy an incredible view of the sea from the saloon but also to take advantage of the large outside space.

wallypower yacht

A luxurious and uncluttered layout

Inside, on the main deck, the open space offers 3 distinct areas, from bow to stern: the helm station, the raised dining/meeting area and the large saloon below, which opens onto the outside without a break in continuity, introducing the concept of the inside-outside living area. A 360° view is available from the dining area thanks to the raised floor. Under the dining table - which seats 8 people - long rectangular glazing brings light to the lower floor. This keeps the dining area at the front away from the heat of the engines. The boat also has 6 plasma screen televisions.

wallypower yacht

Below deck, the owner's cabin is located forward and has a deck porthole for light. There is a large double bed, a private bathroom and a large dressing room. Two guest cabins have a queen-size bed, a dressing room and a bathroom.

The kitchen (with the pantry) includes an oven, stove, television and several refrigerators.

wallypower yacht

A millionaire's boat

The price of the 118 Wallypower is $33 million for the triple gas turbine version, or $22 million for the dual diesel engines. Its range is 1800 miles at 9 knots or 300 miles at 60 knots. Finally, its fuel tank has a capacity of 22 tons.

At the maximum speed of 60 knots, the gas turbine uses 58 litres of fuel per mile, or 3?500 litres per hour. For example, to travel from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back at 50 knots, it takes 90 minutes for 6?000 to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back, using dépensé?! The WallyPower 118 weighs 95 tons and can accommodate 6 crew members and 6 guests on board.

wallypower yacht

Prestigious awards

The 118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design Award, organised by Seatec (the Carrarafiere sailing and navigation technology trade fair) for "Design for the third millennium". It was the only boat in the architecture and design exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 2004/2005), for the exhibition "Glamour : Fabricating Affluence".

New details revealed about Wally's latest 18m wallypower58

After Wally previewed a small taste of its new motor model during the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, there is much to be desired about the wallypower58. Now, eight months later, the Italian builder has officially debuted the 17.66-metre open sports cruiser.

Under the Ferretti Group, the wallypower58 is the first boat to take its cue from the renowned predecessor, the 36-metre wallypower118. The origami shape, high-speed functionality and futuristic lines of the wallypower118 are as iconic now as they were almost twenty years ago on the boat’s launch day. “The shape of the wallypower58 certainly makes her a close relative of the 118,” says Luca Bassani, Founder and Chief Designer of Wally. But what makes the wallypower58 so special is not just the way she looks, but the way the concept was born to facilitate how owners and yachties like to enjoy their time on the water.

Flexible and functional

The wallypower58 is a yacht that gives owners what they want. “This is the first boat that we researched with existing clients,” explains Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s Managing Director. “We asked them how they used their current boat, and what they wanted to have in their next boat.” The research took two years, and the results showed that owners shared a desire for one thing: flexibility.

The wallypower58’s flexible lower deck can be arranged in three different ways to accommodate up to four overnight guests. For the owner who would like more of their own space, the full-beam ‘double saloon’ option offers an open-plan area in which the owner has a separate cabin and bathroom. Whereas the ‘flexi-guest’ layout provides either an additional guest cabin or a temporary crew cabin with en-suite facilities.

“She is a real game-changer, and this flexible design hasn’t been seen before,” says Bassani. “The owners we spoke to also requested the ability to house and launch another tender.” To comply, the wallypower58’s designers created a hydraulic aft platform for toy storage and easy access to the water. “This additional tender can be as big as 2.9 metres and its launch is made easy thanks to this platform,” adds Bassani.

Easy to operate

Ensuring that the boat is easy to handle was high on the agenda. The wallypower58 is the optimal size for those owners wanting to single-handedly captain their boat. “The idea behind the wallypower58 is that she bridges the gap between the brand’s smaller Tender and larger Power range,” says de Vivo. “The result is a boat that can be driven by the owner alone, or by a small crew.”

Another contributor to the wallypower58’s easy handling is the selection of high-tech equipment in the navigation station. What can be found is a Volvo IPS propulsion system with proprietary joystick manoeuvring, dynamic positioning and Assisted Docking software. This kit has control over the yacht’s engine power that can deliver speeds of up to 38 knots with a range of 310 nautical miles. Whatever the weather, she will remain stable thanks to the triple configuration of her shallow draft along with that ever-distinguishable ultra deep-V Wally hull.

The Wally DNA

Wally is no stranger to daring design choices, and with its pillarless curved glass, broad side decks and clear-cut lines, the wallypower58 displays typical Wally DNA, particularly in her superstructure. With double chines in the boat’s hull and air intakes, her lines are as geometric and sleek as those of her forerunner.

With no shortage of natural light entering the boat from overhead, there was no need for her designers to include the traditional openings usually found to port or starboard. Inspired by Wally’s of the past, the cockpit is natural with a lot of light pouring in from the skylight above. Down below, the interior saloon is windowless, to ensure the yacht maintains its sharp, futuristic profile. However, there is a pair of cameras fitted to either side of the hull that can be live-streamed into screens in the saloon, allowing the outside world in.

Practical design

Spacious enough for up to 16 people, the wallypower58’s cockpit is entirely protected from the sun, wind and water. “We wanted to create a boat with more usability and protection compared to other open tenders,” says Bassani. As a result, the cockpit can be adjusted to suit any climate thanks to the automatic windows. On warmer days, four of these guests can opt to lounge on the adjustable sun pad on the aft deck and make use of Wally’s customary hydraulic passerelle, which is included as standard.

Her design also includes a full-height shower integrated into the side of the platform and folding bulwark ‘wings’ that add an extra 25 square metres of entertaining space when extended. Beyond this, her practicality comes from her top-level sea keeping abilities, high-performance system and efficient hull, making her an ideal option for those wanting a chase boat. “In each of the design and engineering choices, it is clear that the Wally philosophy shines through in the new wallypower58,” adds de Vivo.

wallypower yacht

There’s nothing else on the market that comes close to the wallypower165. Its genesis is a story in its own right, uniting for the first time ever the stellar team of Wally founder Luca Bassani and the world’s most in-demand superyacht designer, Espen Øino. Naturally the result is a mould-breaking yacht – a mid-range Mediterranean cruiser that has created an entirely new category. Fast, effortlessly cool and unapologetically contemporary, the wallypower165 features Wally’s typical clean, uncluttered lines, open decks and angular styling. As ever, form follows function, so the wave piercing bow and naval architecture are all conceived for stable, comfortable cruising with no rolling or slamming. We have enhanced the boat’s large 500GT volume with fold-down balconies in the owner’s suite forward and on either side of the main saloon, as well as with Wally’s signature aft wings, which double the beach club area. Emphasis is on blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living, with smart spaces that serve multiple functions. Glass bulwarks are used wherever possible, and exterior doors that fully open. The vast sundeck is a case in point, with the ability to offer sun or shade for a variety of activities, from the bar to the sunpads. The large pool on the main deck has a glass wall and there is exceptional entertaining space below it in the beach club. Radical and modern, the wallypower165 once again shows that Wally is 20 years ahead.
