Evaluating a new boat is sort of like going on a blind date. Your friend-in this case, a builder or broker-extols the virtues of a new model: how good she looks and the quality of her construction. Sometimes, though, what you find at the end of the dock sends a shiver down your spine. In an effort to cut things short, you spend your time aboard plotting an exit strategy.

I felt confident this would not be the case with the new Symbol 58. Since I was acquainted with her sisters, I knew she came from a gene pool with good roots. In fact, I changed my schedule in order to spend some time with her, knowing I would find a well-designed, soundly constructed, high-quality build. After stepping on board in Ft. Lauderdale, I knew instantly the yard had another success on its hands.

The Jack Sarin-designed 58 nicely fills the slot between Symbol’s 54- and 62-foot models. Her styling elements and features are typical of Sarin’s other designs, giving the line a cohesive, identifiable look.

The 58’s most noticeable profile element is her raised pilothouse, with its raked windshield. The black-painted area breaks up the bulk and carries the eye from the after window to the bridge. The bridge overhang has rounded corners, and their softness lends the 58 a contemporary look. The buyer can choose to have this overhang cover the side decks abaft the pilothouse. This may make the profile a little heavy, but it will reduce direct sunlight into the saloon area and keep away the rain. I would forgo this option in favor of cleaner lines.

This type of option, however, is indicative of how Symbol approaches the building process. The company works closely with a small, knowledgeable network of dealers, as well as with buyers. The 58 has a generous allowance for soft goods and gives the buyer a choice of interior woods, layouts and specifications.

“You name it, and they can pretty much do it”, said Whitten Hall, sales and marketing coordinator for Heart Marine, Symbol’s Southeast dealer. Hall walked me through the interior of a fresh 58 as he bubbled with enthusiasm for Heart Marine’s relationship with Symbol.

On our way from Ft. Lauderdale to West Palm Beach, Hall pointed out the changes Symbol and Heart Marine had made at the owner’s request. Some, such as reconfiguring the pilothouse to accommodate two Stidd helm chairs, were significant. Others, such as protecting the electrical panel with a Plexiglas door, were less complicated but no less important. Both dealer and builder welcome the input.

As on any yacht in this range, a lot of customization goes into the arrangement plan. The standard three-stateroom layout on the Symbol 58 is very workable, but the company is happy to accommodate changes. The buyer of our test boat, for instance, wanted a larger shower stall, so Heart’s project manager tweaked the accommodations to provide one.

In the master stateroom, there is a walkaround berth flanked by shelves, cedar-lined lockers and a vanity. Fit and finish are first class, with near-flawless joinery and matched woodwork.

The owner opted for a portside guest stateroom in lieu of an optional office. Twin berths are standard, along with a hanging locker and sufficient stowage. If you don’t need a large office (the master stateroom’s vanity should be fine for a few hours if you need to use a laptop), this option is reasonable. The outboard berth follows the contour of the hull, so it’s narrower than the inboard berth. But this is seen primarily at the foot of the berth and is not a big deal.

The forward guest stateroom is tucked into the bow and has an island berth, a clever slideaway TV/DVD system, two hanging lockers and access to the shared guest head.

The raised pilothouse has plenty of space for electronics and a fully equipped galley. In the saloon, a 7-foot, 9-inch L-shape settee is opposite two overstuffed barrel chairs. While seated, you can see out the side windows, which is a real plus. A 42-inch flat-screen television pops up from the forward credenza. I would ask for double sliding doors to the afterdeck, which would open the view a bit. In that case, the settee arrangement would be different; I’ve seen it aboard other Symbols and it works well.

A staircase leads from the pilothouse area to the flying bridge. The incline of the steps is gradual, so walking between the bridge and galley with your hands full is easy. The bridge is well laid out with enough seating for captain and guests. An optional second helm chair ($2,095) for the bridge is a must-have, in my opinion. This allows a second person to get comfortable and watch the action ahead. For relaxing, an L-shape settee and a straight settee are abaft the helm. On our test boat, the owner ordered a fiberglass bar unit with refrigerator and grill abaft the starboard settee. Thanks to the raised helm area, the line of sight forward is good. Symbol offers a choice of a bimini top or hardtop over the flying bridge area. The yard and dealer work with each buyer in selecting a tender, ensuring the stanchions, davit and cradle are suitable for her size.

Also worth noting are the 58’s construction and systems. Below the waterline, the hull is solid fiberglass with three layers of vinylester resin. Above the waterline, high-density, closed-cell, foam-cored sandwich construction provides strength while keeping weight in check. The engineroom is smartly arranged and should allow for fairly easy service. Two 425-gallon fiberglass fuel tanks are outboard of the twin 700 hp Caterpillar C-12 diesels. Lead-lined 2-inch foam and powder-coated, perforated aluminum panels provide good sound insulation. At cruising speed, we recorded a very respectable 76 decibels in the saloon. In the pilothouse, sound levels never exceeded 75 decibels.

You would be wrong in thinking the Symbol 58 is just another pretty face suited for dockside entertaining. A northerly wind churned the water along the eastern coast of Florida for several days, so we had the pleasure of testing her in a fairly confused sea state. Would I go offshore on the 58? You bet. Would I add stabilizers for increased comfort? Yes, though the boat did fairly well without them. (Stabilizers were not yet installed on our test boat.) Sarin’s hull is easily driven and tracks well. The angle of the shafts is reduced thanks to deep propeller pockets, which provide an accommodating 4-foot, 2-inch draft. Blazing at 20 knots into a 3- to 4-foot chop, we did take one heavy drenching over the bow. Considering the conditions, though, we weren’t surprised.

One of the real attributes of this moderate V-shape hull is the boat’s resulting ability to run efficiently at low speeds (for when range is an issue) and your ability to push the throttle if you need to. “We have a 58 coming with the 800 hp Cats”, said Hall, referring to the Caterpillar 3406E diesel option. “I’m anxious to see what this is going to do.” As for me, I’m just anxious to get a second date.

Timeless Seas is again available for viewing after being temporarily withdrawn from the market. The owner of this remarkable vessel has upgraded this deserving listing to our very rare status of “Gold Seal”. To earn Gold Seal status requires an out of water survey (completed and available) and a mechanical inspection (available) to confirm the condition of the vessel at the owner’s expense. The owner then undertakes to correct or disclose all noted deficiencies. The huge advantage of this process is the removal of risk for a purchaser in subsequently discovering problems during the due diligence process. It was determined during the initial mechanical inspection that certain components of the Cummins Aftercoolers were nearing the last few years of serviceable life. In keeping with the exceptionally high standards of maintenance that has been lavished on this vessel over its short life, the owner, predictably said: “Why service them? Order new ones!”  They were replaced, at a cost of over $30,000 installed. A true “Gold Seal” Vessel!

Timeless Seas is truly an exceptional example of a high-end quality built Symbol Classic Pilothouse 58 motor yacht. Her first owner made many significant upgrades during the construction process. Her second and current owner who is a precision engineer has gone well beyond that. His obsession with maintenance and up-grades has served this truly turn-key vessel extremely well. 

There is an expression in boating circles that is sometimes, but very rarely heard: “You can eat off the engine room floor”. In this particular case you actually can, but the owner will definitely not allow it!  This vessel is a joy to behold and is truly in mint condition. Not only has she been boat-house kept (the boathouse, if required, is available separately in Maple Bay) but shoes have never ever been worn aboard this vessel.  It shows!

This Symbol Classic Pilothouse 58 boasts a very fuel efficient full-displacement hull designed by the respected Jack W. Sarin N.A. and she slips along silently at 9.5 knots sipping less than 10 gallons an hour!  If you are pressed for time however, she will cruise effortlessly all day at 13 knots.

As you approach this elegant low-profile Symbol Classic Pilothouse 58, you will appreciate the timeless and distinctive exterior styling and the truly classic traditional lines, a wrap-around Portuguese bridge, wide covered walkaround side decks, a 14′ wide flybridge, and huge vista enhancing salon windows. The easily driven modified “V” hull is perfected for economical cruising and the deep full keel protects props and rudders and of course provides directional stability even in cross seas. The Naiad roll-stabilizers will keep your coffee on an even keel even in wicked conditions.

As you step into the teak-soled cockpit, this spacious area and salon have been balanced to provide maximum space through use of Diamond Seaglaze double sliding doors . A spacious lazarette area below the aft cockpit includes commodious storage and a safe and convenient engine room “lobby area” before reaching the watertight steel door which leads into the engine room.

The salon and pilothouse have multiple huge panoramic windows and are positioned to provide maximum light inside the boat, with good views whether sitting or standing. The extended salon features a large social area, which includes a long L-shaped sofa to starboard, with extra cabinet and drawer storage to port. A unique feature is the stunning bird’s eye maple extending coffee table which also lifts to convert to a full dining suite. The storage cabinet includes a large flat-screen TV on an electric lift.

A few steps up from the extensive salon is the pilothouse. This is a key feature of this motor-yacht which is set up for serious navigation with a commanding view.  The large multi-function navigation and control screens can split into many simultaneous views and also integrate with the on-board cameras. The informal dining area is adjacent to the well-equipped and ergonomic galley. A comfortable top-quality fully adjustable helm seat pampers the skipper. Weathertight doors both port and starboard allow quick access to the outer decks for easy docking.  A corded remote  allows the skipper to manoeuvre the vessel in close quarters accurately from the outer decks. Another unique feature which sets this yacht apart is the Portuguese Bridge with forward seating areas out front. The pilothouse has superb visibility and is the focal social point when this beautiful yacht is underway. 

The galley is much larger than one would expect on a vessel this size. Several storage cabinets above both countertops are complemented by units with deep drawers and storage in the lower units. Tasteful Corian countertops provide huge preparation area and working counter-space. There is even a Fisher-Paykel dishwasher to make the chef’s life more pleasurable.

From the forward starboard corner of the pilothouse, a tasteful curved stairway leads below to the spacious three staterooms, the stacked full size GE washer/dryer, and of course, yet more storage. The full width Master Stateroom with separate head and separate shower is located amidships, featuring a centerline queen. Four stainless steel opening ports provide cross ventilation and wonderful natural light. The VIP Stateroom is forward and has a centerline queen berth with large drawers under, lockers and a commodious storage area. There is a separate private door between this stateroom to the forward washroom as well as access from the common corridor The Guest Stateroom to port features upper and lower berths, reading lights and a good sized hanging locker. Each sleeping area has its own flat screen TV.

From the pilothouse a convenient few stairs up takes you a few further steps up to a large full beam flybridge, featuring built-in settees, two raised and adjustable helm seats, sun lounge and boat deck. An outdoor summer galley food prep area includes a refrigerator with a sink and storage. The dinghy deck has over 13′ of space, and a 800lb dinghy crane.

There was a website titled Symbol Yachts - Buyer Beware on the internet until recently. I guess it's been taken down either because of the threat of legal action or the owner was eventually compensated. Anyway, the website was put up by a very disgruntled Aussie buyer who had bought a Symbol and then found that the local dealer and Symbol themselves washed their hands of the many problems the buyer had experienced. I seem to remember that the dealer went into liquidation in order to avoid liability for the problems. Symbol is yet another of those Taiwanese builders selling trawleresque mobos into the US market http://www.symbolyachts.com . I suspect this 58 advertised is a case of caveat emptor and I'm not sure its worth even the starting bid

Would something like that be happy going across the north sea. What sort of fuel burn are you looking at, at cruising speed, and at say ten knots plodding.. I am guessing that most boats of that size weight etc would burn similar

Up 58% YTD, is Eli Lilly Stock Still a Buy?

Valued at $876.3 billion, Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) is a mega-cap pharmaceutical company that focuses on creating and distributing groundbreaking treatments for obesity, diabetes , cancer, immunological disorders, and neurological conditions. LLY stock has been on a tear over the past year, driven by the blockbuster success of its Type II diabetes and obesity drugs, marketed as Mounjaro and Zepbound , respectively. LLY is up 68.6% over the past 52 weeks, and the shares have gained 58% on a YTD basis . 

That's a considerable outperformance compared to the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) , which is up 27.7% in the last 52 weeks, and about 17% so far in 2024.

LLY also has a solid dividend history, with its quarterly payout of $1.30 backed by nine years of consistent growth. Given the stock's meteoric rise, Lilly's current yield is a relatively modest 0.56%.

Eli Lilly Exceeds Q2 Expectations

The pharmaceutical company posted its Q2 earnings results earlier this month, with net income of $2.97 billion, or $3.92 per share on an adjusted basis, beating Wall Street’s estimate by a wide margin. 

Revenue for the quarter stood at $11.3 billion, miles ahead of analysts' $9.83 billion forecast. The quarterly outperformance was led by blockbuster sales for its diabetes drug Mounjaro and weight-loss injection Zepbound, which together generated over $4 billion in sales during the period.

Looking ahead, Lilly hiked its annual revenue forecast by $3 billion to a range between $45.4 billion and $46.6 billion, and now expects adjusted earnings per share in the range of $16.10 to $16.60 - up by $2.60 from the earlier forecast. 

Management attributed the upwardly revised guidance to “improved clarity into the timing and pace of the company's production expansions and planned Mounjaro launches outside the U.S.”

How Do Analysts Rate Eli Lilly Stock?

Analysts rate LLY stock a “Strong Buy” overall, with the consensus among the 22 analysts in coverage even slightly more bullish than it was earlier this summer. The stock has 20 “Strong Buy” ratings on Wall Street, up from 18 one month ago, along with 1 “Moderate Buy” and 1 “Hold” - down from 2 “Holds” last month.

After the earnings beat, Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Terence Flynn named LLY as a “Top Pick,” while reiterating an “Overweight” rating on the stock and raising his price target from $1,083 to $1,106. The analyst upwardly revised his forecasts for Mounjaro and Zepbound post-earnings, and said he's also optimistic about the prospects for LLY's oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, with phase 3 results expected in mid-2025.

“We believe LLY offers the most attractive opportunity in our coverage for upside to consensus estimates, despite the stock’s outperformance," concluded Flynn.

The mean price target for LLY is now $961.52, implying expected upside of about 4.5% to current levels. The Street-high price target of $1,117 suggests that Eli Lilly stock could rise as much as 21.4% from here.
